Tikiphone to launch Pacific Island’s first 3G+ network with Alcatel-Lucent and API

Alcatel-Lucent,  today announced that Tikiphone, French Polynesia’s leading mobile service provider, will soon launch the region’s first 3G+ network by upgrading its network to High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) technology to support a full range of high-speed mobile Internet and data services.

Tikiphone will introduce Alcatel-Lucent’s High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) solution in Papeete, Tahiti, enabling the operator to offer its customers new mobile broadband services, which will be several times faster than the current network.

The first network of its type in the South Pacific region, this deployment supports Tikiphone’s leadership position in the competitive market of French Polynesia.  By enabling Tikiphone to evolve from a 2G network to a 3G network on the mobility platform, Alcatel-Lucent's solution provides additional network capacity with the support of its exclusive partner in the Pacific Islands region,  API French Polynesia.

“Tikiphone’s objective is to offer optimum mobile and data services to subscribers in French Polynesia. The success of our i-Vini content portal and our internet mobile service has demonstrated the huge potential of mobile broadband and the Alcatel-Lucent HSPA tailored solution proposed by API has met our expectations to deliver new 3G+ services,” said Yannick Teriierooiterai, General Manager of Tikiphone.   “We think that HSPA combined with GSM/EDGE is the most cost-effective solution for delivering service continuity and the best user experience.”

In addition to deploying HSDPA, the project will increase network coverage and the capacity of the existing GSM/EDGE network.

API will deploy a suite of Alcatel-Lucent systems including the 9311 Macro Node B suite of products, media gateways and 9100 GSM Base station.

“This win demonstrates the value of the local presence, knowledge and commitment of API in the Pacific Islands, combined with the technology leadership of Alcatel-Lucent in mobile communications to deliver a solution that positions our customers well to meet the challenge of increasing competition in the Pacific Islands,” said Hilary Mine, Vice President of Alcatel-Lucent activities in Australasia and North Asia.

Together API and Alcatel-Lucent have supported the rollout of Tikiphone’s network since 1995, including installation and testing for a trial of HSDPA in 2007.

“This is a major success for API and Alcatel-Lucent in French Polynesia.  We are proud to be the supplier of the first commercial HSDPA network of the Pacific Islands region and we would like to thank Tikiphone for its renewed trust and long-term partnership,” said Rémi Galasso, General Manager of API.

Alcatel-Lucent’s radio access cost-efficient solution enables service providers to support several standards like GSM, EDGE and EDGE+ and to introduce new technologies such as W-CDMA, HSPA, HSPA+ and LTE with smooth evolution path according to their market needs.
