Huawei announced that its has successfully enabled Latin America's first 3G (UMTS) call in Uruguay. The historical call, which was made through Administracin Nacional de Telecomunicaciones ("ANTEL"), one of Uruguay's leading telecom operators, was based on Huawei Technologies' end-to-end R4-based UMTS network.
At the celebration ceremony, Ms. Maria Simon, President of ANTEL said, "It is an exciting moment for Latin Americans, as this historical 3G call made available with Huawei Technologies' UMTS solution, marked the first time for Latin Americans to experience enriched telecommunications via 3G technology,"

ANTEL selected Huawei Technologies' end-to-end R4-based UMTS solution to help them create and provide new, exciting services, including video phone, high-speed internet, live TV, real-time monitoring, multimedia services, to Uruguay's people," said Mr. Philip Jiang, President of Huawei Technologies' Latin American Region. "We look forward to further co-operating with ANTEL to bring more colourful, high-quality communications services to Latin Americans."

Mr. Jorge Lepra, Uruguay's Minister of Industry & Energy and Mr. Yong-zhan Wang, China's Ambassador for the country witnessed the historical moment of Latin America's first 3G mobile phone call connected in Uruguay.
