Motorola today announced it is providing a trial Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network for Portugal's TMN. The trial network provides UMTS coverage to the Portuguese island of Madeira.

Motorola is delivering an operational trial UMTS network to TMN by providing the equipment and managed services essential for a highly efficient and optimised network. The managed services approach allows TMN to minimise the risk associated with the deployment and operation of the network.

David Lopes, TMN Chief Technical Officer, commented: "As we continue our efforts to implement innovative 3G wireless services, we look to Motorola to continue to provide us with a cost effective and high performance network. Motorola's support in managing our trial network will help us to provide our subscribers with a high quality 3G experience in Madeira, whether they are watching video clips or browsing the internet on their phone."

Margaret Rice-Jones, corporate vice president Motorola Inc. and region management for Motorola Networks in EMEA added: "Today's announcement reflects Motorola?s further success and commitment to the European market and to UMTS. Our role in helping to manage TMN's UMTS network also demonstrates our strong technical experience, and we look forward to working with TMN as it delivers further exciting services to subscribers."

Motorola's UMTS equipment, such as the compact Horizon 3G base station, is easy to install thereby enabling shorter deployment times. In addition, Motorola's high performance UMTS network solution offers a low dropped-call rate that is comparable to high-performing GSM levels, providing users with an excellent quality of service.
