Lucent Technologies today announced that Telefonica Moviles Espaa, Spain's largest mobile operator, have awarded to Lucent Technologies the deployment of the aggregation edge layer, nationwide, of their ATM network, to carry the voice and data traffic within the UTRAN of Telefonica Moviles's third-generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network. This project will enable Telefonica Moviles to efficiently and robustly manage the increase in network traffic as customers subscribe to new 3G UMTS services including Internet access, e-mail and Mobile Multimedia Services (MMS).
As part of the agreement, Lucent will supply and maintain its PacketStar (PSAX) 4500 Multiservice Media Gateways to aggregate Telefnica Mviles" voice and data traffic on its ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network. The contract with Telefnica Mviles is one of several similar contracts in Europe and globally for the Lucent PSAX product family during the past 24 months. Overall, more than 40,000 PSAX switches are deployed in networks worldwide.
"Telefnica Mviles is committed to providing its customers useful new services that will enable them to quickly and reliably transmit pictures, data and even video with the same ease that they now have a telephone conversation," said Ignacio Camarero, CTO of Telefnica Mviles. "Lucent Technologies choice was based on a solid offer that matched with all our requirements and expectations."
Lucent will supply the network management software to manage and operate the network and the advanced services supported by the gateways, and Lucent Worldwide Services will manage the project, helping Telefnica Mviles with the design, planning and integration of this solution in its network, as well as providing on going support services.
"We are very pleased to be working with Telefnica Mviles to support the rollout of its exciting new 3G UMTS services," said Bernardo Villazan, president of Lucent Technologies Spain. "Our solutions will enable Telefnica Mviles to cost-effectively migrate its existing transport network as demand for new 3G UMTS services increases. The PSAX platform"s features, very small size and flexible choice of four chassis options, have made it a favorite among mobile operators introducing UMTS - it can save UMTS infrastructure and operations costs."
Lucent will manage the PSAX elements using the Navis? PSAX Element Management System (EMS), a Java? based GUI (Graphic User Interface) that enables comprehensive, real-time, centralized element management, including system configuration and upgrading, and fault and performance monitoring. |
