NTT DoCoMo to Expand 3G International Short Messaging Service PDF Print E-mail

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. and its eight regional subsidiaries announced today that they will offer an international SMS (short messaging service) that allows DoCoMo FOMA 3G users to exchange short messages with customers of foreign operators.

All FOMA handsets except PC-card types and some early models will be able to receive SMS messages from overseas, while N900iG and 901i handsets will be able to both send and receive messages.

The new service will start nationwide from February 15, 2005 and cost the sender 50 yen per message of up to 160 alphanumeric characters.

The sender must first press 0 for more than 1 second until the + mark is displayed and then dial the country code and the receiver's cell phone number.

SMS users will be able to exchange messages with customers of the following operators.

Operator: Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd.; Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., Ltd.; Taiwan Cellular Corporation

Operator: PT Telekomunikasi Selular; PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation Tbk.

Location: Hong Kong
Operator: Hutchison Telephone Company Limited; SmarTone Mobile Communications Limited
Location: Singapore
Operator: StarHub Mobile Pte Ltd.; MobileOne Ltd.

Note 1: SMS cannot be sent to 3G users of Hutchison (Hong Kong), SmarTone (Hong Kong) and StarHub (Singapore).
Note 2: In some cases messages cannot be exchanged due to conditions on the operator's side.
