Mobitel was among the first in the world to introduce the third generation mobile communications. Despite the fact that the network, the services and the billing system have already been operative, the pre-commercial operation of Mobitel UMTS followed due to the lack of user friendly UMTS terminals. In this period the operator was expanding the network, developing services and testing UMTS terminals to launch commercial UMTS at the end of September, offering the UMTS mobile handset Sony Ericsson Z1010 to the subscribers of Mobitel's Student package. It is the students who are the most frequent visitors of Mobitel's multimedia portal Planet and also otherwise most susceptible for novelties in mobile communications. Therefore, they are the ones to most appreciate the advantages of UMTS: videotelephony, fast data transfer (up to 384 kb/s) and consequently a more effective use of multimedia contents. In October Mobitel UMTS services were already used by 2.588 Mobitel subscribers. Mobitel UMTS users transfer in average 16-times more data a month than the users of the second generation, and four fifths of them are using videotelephony.

Commercial Mobitel UMTS Offer
Beginning with 28 October all Mobitel GSM/UMTS subscribers will now have the possibility to choose between two new UMTS mobile phones: Sony Ericsson Z1010 or the mobile phone quite new to the Slovenian market Samsung SGH Z105U. Both support videotelephony and data transfer at the speed of up to 384 kb/s. Both will be available at promotion price of SIT 59,900 upon entering or extending a subscribtion relation for the period of 24 months. Those entering a subscription to "Mobitel UMTS" package will be able to purchase the phones at an even friendlier price of 9.900 SIT under the same conditions. "Mobitel UMTS" package is intended for everyone that intensively use data transfer. Therefore the monthly subscribtion fee of SIT 15,000 will cover the transfer of 200 MB of pre-purchased data, 200 minutes of videotelephony in Slovenia, and 200 MMS messages of up to 100 kB, as well as 200 minutes of conversations in Mobitel's networks and 200 minutes of conversations within the subscriber's MPO. The offer includes the Option Globetrotter Fusion PC card, which is one of the few in the world market supporting GSM, GPRS, UMTS, and WLAN networks. It is available to Mobitel's subscribers at promotion price of SIT 69.900 SIT or even for as little as 19.900 SIT to the subscriber that will have the "Mega" or the "Business Mega" data transfer activated during the binding period of 24 months. It is very easy to become a Mobitel UMTS user. All you need is to change the mobile phone, the user can keep the SIM card, the phone number and the selected subscription package with the prices of the existing services remaining unchanged.

Finally the user is only to send an SMS with the word UMTS to the designated number 1918 to activate videotelephony, which is, during the promotion period, still free of charge until further notice.

Network and Coverage
Mobitel UMTS network covers larger Slovenian towns, which is more than half the country's population. The second phase of building the UMTS network is now in progress and will be completed in the year 2005 with the signal covering the Slovenian motorway cross and all the towns with more than 1,500 inhabitants. Tthe map of Mobitel UMTS coverage is available at www.mobitel.si/zemljevidUMTS. In addition to the simple use, UMTS mobile phones have the advantage of automatic transition between the networks of second and third generation. So, if the user finds himself in a place not yet covered by the UMTS signal, the mobile phone will automatically shift to Mobitel GSM network with the signal already covering 99% of the population. This will allow you to continue to use of services such as making calls, browsing on the Planet, SMS and MMS messaging and such, except the videocall. Data will be transferred with the speed supported by the GPRS.

Roaming
Since Mobitel was among the first in the world to introduce UMTS, its roaming possibilities are mainly depending on the technical and overabl capacities of the foreign operators. Numerous testings are still taking place, while the number of available UMTS romaings will soon increase with the growing number of operators introducing UMTS. At the moment Mobitel UMTS roaming is already possible in the networks of Austrian T-Mobile, Italian H3G, Israeli operator Partner, and from Thursday, 28 October, also in the German T-Mobile and as a testing in the British H3G. Agreements on UMTS roaming are in the concluding phase with UMTS operators in Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, Singapore, Finland, Hong Kong and an additional roaming in Italy. Since UMTS mobile phones automatically shift to the other GSM generations where there is no UMTS coverage, Mobitel UMTS users can use the GSM roaming in the networks of all 272 operators in 167 countries of the world with whom Mobitel has roaming agreements.

New on the Planet
Mobitel's Planet portal has been visited by 570,000 different users of Mobitel networks, 185.000 having chosen a personalised Planet. The Planet has thus been visited by 40% of Mobitel's GSM/UMTS networks users, which is one of the highest penetrations in the world. The contents and services of the Planet are available to all users, while the owners of UMTS mobile handsets can browse faster with a better quality output of the video contents such as camera recordings from Slovenia and abroad, music and erotic videos, TV news, weather, film trailers, video funnies, live TV programmes and much more. The Planet-portal team has prepared a series of novelties for this autumn, which are to a largely innovative Slovenian products, a result of our own know-how and creativity. The hit of this autumn is the improved "Let's Meet" service, where one can enrich the adverts with picture sound or video. On 20 October Mobitel presented the "Uvertura"(ringback service), which is already a great success in the world and now for the first time available also in Slovenia. In just four days it was set by 5,000 users. "Confidential talk", the first mobile interactive counselling service, is also coming to the Planet enabling the users to ask questions about life, love and every day problems. Among the coming novelties there is also the web portal "Zabavaj.se" (have fun) to be found at www.zabavaj.se. The latter is a treasury of more than 900,000 songs of different authors and genres, from which you may select and transfer to your computer paying by credit card or mobile phone.
