Alcatel has been selected by Telefnica Mviles to deploy and integrate a video gateway solution into the operator's 3G/UMTS network in Spain that will enable the operator to launch new video services.

Alcatel's video gateway solution opens the way to a range of new real-time end-user services, such as video calls between 3G mobile handsets and a fixed PCs, person-to-machine video applications like mobile telesurveillance (including 'nanny cam') or video mailboxes, and future applications to be defined and explored in further stages.

Alcatel's solution is highly flexible, as it copes with the management of both mobile (H324M) and fixed (H323 or SIP) video protocols, thus making possible video-communications between any mobile and fixed terminal and even between fixed terminals with different video protocols. This solution brings to Telefnica Mviles the highest level of flexibility necessary to cope with the rapid evolutions of the new real-time broadband applications market.

"We have selected Alcatel's video gateway solution because of the unique flexibility it offers for the management of heterogeneous mobile and fixed video protocols," Fernando Fournon, CTO of Telefnica Mviles Espaa declared. "We recognize Alcatel as a solid partner to help us achieve one of our major goals, which is to offer our subscribers a seamless video experience in all the aspects of their daily lives."

"This project with Telefnica Mviles is of a strategic importance for Alcatel as it represents a clear acknowledgement of Alcatel's leadership in new UMTS multimedia services and platforms," pointed out Alfredo Redondo, chief executive officer of Alcatel Espaa. "This new contract reinforces Alcatel's commitment to video services as a clear driver of our user-centric broadband vision."

Mobile video services represent real opportunities for mobile operators to grow their revenues and differentiate from their competitors, all while satisfying end-users' demands for personalized, interactive services that enable them to share images and emotions. Alcatel is committed to helping its clients succeed in this domain with its 'best-of-breed' mobile infrastructure, its complete portfolio of applications solutions, and its in-house expertise and experience for integration. Alcatel is also best positioned to offer its customers a seamless, converged fixed/mobile video service solution.
