Companies Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Develop and Market Base Band Chipsets
Motorola, Inc. Semiconductor Products Sector and Datang Mobile have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop base band chipset solutions for the TD-SCDMA infrastructure market. The two companies also jointly plan to promote and market TD-SCDMA semiconductor products and solutions to the growing Chinese market.
TD-SCDMA is a third generation (3G) wireless technology developed by China. In 2002, the China Ministry of Information Industries allocated 155 MHz of bandwidth to TD-SCDMA. Last year, the Chinese government committed 600 million yuan (US$72.3 million) for research in the technology.
Datang has been the co-inventor and principal driver of TD-SCDMA, owning the core technologies as well as developing the access network. The TD-SCDMA technology proposed by Datang on behalf of China was adopted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
As one of the founding member of the TD-SCDMA forum, Motorola has one of the industry's most comprehensive networking silicon portfolios. Motorola's MRC6011 device, based on its Reconfigurable Compute Fabric (RCF) technology provides a flexible and cost effective solution for 3G base station channel cards.
"Motorola's MRC6011 is an excellent match for TD-SCDMA standard as both are designed to handle highly intensive and asymmetric functions in a cost-effective manner with minor technical risks and smooth migration paths," said Mr. Tang Ruan, Chief Operating Officer of Datang Mobile. "We are very excited to work with Motorola and combine our strengths to promote an excellent solution to the rest of the world."
Based on this agreement, Motorola will provide the semiconductor expertise and Datang will provide the standards-compliant system reference model applied to TD-SCDMA base band chipset. |
