Telefonica Moviles Espana to provide corporate intranet access to customers in Spain using Merlin U530(TM) Wireless PC Card Modem developed by Lucent and Novatel Wireless
Lucent Technologies and Novatel Wireless, Inc. today announced that Telefonica Moviles Espana (TME) is offering the Merlin U530(TM) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Wireless PC Card Modem - jointly developed by Lucent and Novatel Wireless - to customers on its third-generation (3G) UMTS network in Spain. These cards will enable TME to offer their enterprise and consumer customers enhanced services - such as high-quality streaming video and audio, secure mobile access to e-mail with large attachments and other productivity-enhancing applications geared toward enterprise customers - at speeds of up to 384 kilobits per second.
The two companies are supplying TME with the Merlin U530 cards, system software and services to support its commercial 3G service rollout, which began last week. The Merlin U530 - plugged into a laptop PC - will provide users with mobile connections to TME's UMTS network.
The maintenance and installation services for the commercial deployment were carried out by Lucent Worldwide Services, the consultancy and services arm of Lucent Technologies.
"We are delighted to be working alongside TME as they develop their 3G service offerings, and introduce innovative new business and consumer services to the Spanish market," said David Poticny, president, Lucent Technologies Europe. "Our research demonstrates that there is a strong demand for high-speed mobile data services among enterprise customers and this is confirmed by TME's successful introduction of commercial 3G services for the business market."
"We look forward to working with Telefonica Moviles Espana and Lucent on this deployment, and appreciate this opportunity to demonstrate the advantages that 3G UMTS has to offer consumers and businesses," said Peter Leparulo, CEO of Novatel Wireless. "This represents another key milestone in our efforts to promote the rapid adoption of mobile high-speed data solutions and further expands our market penetration in Asia-Pacific and European regions." |
