At one minute past midnight, 00.01am, today, T-Mobile's switch was turned on, activating T-Mobile's UK 3G network, joining T-Mobile's other 3G networks in Germany and Austria.
This marks the culmination of 10 years of planning and development and over 3 million man-hours of work. At the same time T-Mobile's pan-European 3G Service Management Centre in Bonn has been opened.
At present, the 3G networks are being used by selected customers using 2.5 and 3G data cards in laptops with automatic roaming across T-Mobile's seamless network. In the coming months, T-Mobile will be launching 3G handsets and services on a widening basis as part of an integrated approach to the provision of new data, broadband and other services.
Brian McBride, Managing Director of T-Mobile UK, said: "Making our 3G networks live is a major milestone in the evolution of the UK mobile industry. Our network quality and reliability already exceeds our commercial launch expectations and they give surprisingly good performance. They form part of a distinctive approach to providing high speed mobile and delivering the personal and business services our customers want. We will be saying more about this in the weeks and months ahead." |
