Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens mobile) has been commissioned by mobile communications service provider DiGi Telecommunications to continue to provide EDGE technology on its network - now for the Klang Valley region to the north and south of Kuala Lumpur. Already in May 2003 Siemens was awarded the order to set up Asia's first commercial EDGE network for DiGi in the capital of Malaysia.

The new contract encompasses the delivery of 170 EDGE base stations in the area around Kuala Lumpur, in order to upgrade the GSM network in this region to a high-speed data network. The EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) technology permits even faster data rates than GPRS and is another "intermediate step" from GSM technology toward UMTS.

"We are working with two infrastructure partners to implement our aggressive expansion plan to upgrade the network to allow our more than 2.2 million customers with convenience, speed and flexibility of the EDGE enabled 3G services on our EDGE network," said Jon Eddy, Chief Technical Officer of DiGi Telecommunications.
