SmarTone has extended LTE coverage to the first MTR underground railway station at Admiralty, Hong Kong. The first phase, spanning the stations and tunnels in between Admiralty, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wanchai and Causeway Bay, will be operational by 26 October. LTE technology will be extended gradually to the rest of the MTR system, with full coverage expected to be achieved by early 2013.

SmarTone announced today that its 4G LTE network will commence coverage of the first MTR station at Admiralty on Monday, 15 October, 2012.

The first phase, spanning the stations and tunnels in between Admiralty, Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Wanchai and Causeway Bay will be operational by 26 October.

Roll-out of 4G coverage will extend progressively, in phases, to the rest of the MTR system. Full 4G coverage for all MTR stations and adjoining tunnels is expected to be achieved by early next year.

"Our decision to implement 4G LTE on 1800 MHz spectrum is again vindicated with the coming full roll out of 4G coverage within the MTR system. I am sure our 4G customers will be delighted to start enjoying 4G service in the MTR so soon. Our timing is impeccable with the launch of our iPhone 5 TV commercials this evening, together with TV commercials for three of our exclusive services,” said Mr. Douglas Li, CEO of SmarTone. “And now with this announcement we have a further proposition to our iPhone 5 customers who will be the first to enjoy 4G in the MTR, starting next Monday. We are confident that they will love the difference.”
