Following a two-year major network upgrade, Vodafone Australia has launched HSPA+ Dual Carrier technology in key parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide and Newcastle. With all its base stations ready for LTE, the Australian operator plans to start its LTE rollout in early 2013. The developments are part of its AU$1.7 billion network upgrade.

Vodafone today announced the launch of the most critical phase of its $1.7 billion network upgrade, with all base station sites now equipped with the latest Vodafone 3G+ and 4G-ready network technology.

As the owner and operator of Australia’s newest network, Vodafone is now starting to dial up data speeds with today’s launch of Vodafone 3G+ (Dual Carrier HSPA+) services in key parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide and Newcastle.

“Over the last two years, we’ve been working hard to upgrade the Vodafone network, and now have brand new equipment at every Vodafone base station across Australia,” explained Peter Ryan, General Manager Networks. “We’re now ready to accelerate our data speeds and the speed of network upgrades with the introduction of Vodafone 3G+ this month and our planned rapid roll out of 4G (LTE) from early next year.”

Vodafone customers with the latest - or soon to be launched - smartphones can expect to receive data speeds from 2 – 16 Mbps, which is around eight times faster than the average previously available on the Vodafone 3G network within selected metropolitan areas. Customers are invited to check detailed coverage maps at www.vodafone.com.au/coverage, which show Vodafone’s new and planned 3G+ coverage areas.

Vodafone customers’ mobile coverage experience will be further enhanced with an expanded network joint venture with Optus, which will provide Vodafone customers with coverage reaching 96% of the Australian population, from as early as April 2013.

Vodafone confirmed that customers’ current mobile phones, tablets and mobile broadband devices will remain compatible with the new, higher speed Vodafone mobile network, however the optimum data experience within Vodafone 3G+ coverage areas will only be available using the latest Vodafone 3G+ compatible smartphones, tablets and mobile broadband devices.
