Telekom Austria’s domestic unit A1 has unveiled its LTE network in all provincial capitals and major conurbations of the country. The capital Vienna boasts the largest LTE network coverage, with more than 80% of its population within the LTE footprint. More than two thirds of A1’s mobile base stations are connected to the company’s core fibre optic infrastructure.

The Telekom Austria Group today announced that its domestic subsidiary A1 deploys the largest LTE network coverage in the country based on a recent independent audit by Systemics-PAB, a leading assessor of mobile networks.

The steady surge in data traffic due to the growing popularity of social media and social networking sites as well as the dynamic development of smartphones and tablets has posed challenges network operators to deliver higher quality and match the growing demand with increased network capacity. In order to continue to guarantee a high-quality network and meet the ever-rising demand for higher data rates, the company became the first Austrian provider to commercially launch an LTE-based 4G mobile network as early as October 2010. Since then, A1’s 4G LTE mobile network has been made available in all provincial capitals and major conurbations of the country.

“Our efforts to expand our network to meet ever-rising demand are paying off. By year-end 2012, more than one quarter of the Austrian population will be able to use this ultrafast data technology. In recent years, we have also invested greatly in our 3G network, enabling transmission speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s based on the HSPA+ Dual Cell technology and reaching coverage of roughly 70% country-wide,” said Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO Telekom Austria Group.

The Group’s domestic subsidiary A1 is upgrading its mobile base stations on the basis of the 4G LTE technology, reaching a threefold increase in network capacities, as well as connecting them to its high-performance fiber-optic network infrastructure. Two thirds of the company’s mobile base stations have already been connected via fiber-optic technology, with Vienna leading the pack with a total of 250 mobile base stations already connected to the A1 fiber-optic backbone infrastructure and LTE network coverage of over 80% of the population. By year-end 2012, a total of 400 base stations will be connected via fiber-optic technology, enabling higher data rates and considerably shorter response times for Internet queries.

The Group’s domestic subsidiary A1 has a proven track record of delivering outstanding network performance and providing cutting-edge technologies as demonstrated by numerous international benchmark analyses.
