Telefónica has unveiled its own-brand connected ebook reading device, the Movistar ebook bq, manufactured by Mundo Reader. The Movistar ebook bq features a 6-inch Sipix screen, a capacitive touchscreen, WiFi, 2 GB flash memory and a microSD card slot. The Wifi version of the Movistar ebook bq will retail at EUR169, while a 3G model will be available later this year.

Telefónica has unveiled today its connected ebook reading device, Movistar ebook bq, with sales set to begin on 14 June. This marks the operator’s first step towards offering customers access to written cultural and entertainment content at any time and from anywhere.

Telefónica designed and manufactured Movistar ebook bq in conjunction with Mundo Reader, a Spanish company with vast experience in the manufacture and sale of this type of device.

The main difference between Movistar ebook bq and other e-readers and mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, is its screen. The Movistar ebook bq has a 6” latest-generation (SiPix Glass UltraResistive)™ display that allows for continuous reading and offers users a better experience than reading on paper, connection to Internet and other features, such as integrated dictionaries and the ability to listen to music while reading, all accessible through a user-friendly touch screen. Moreover, its design allows for a battery life of several days of full use, compared to just hours for smartphones and tablets.

Movistar ebook bq will be available at Movistar outlets, department stores and specialist shops starting 14 June, and is set to become one of the main devices in the summer campaign. Its e-ink display enables users to read in direct sunlight, making it ideal for reading outdoors and on holidays.
Movistar ebook bq owners will have access to the Movistar ebook service through various menus and options, with an icon on the device’s home screen.

Telefónica is working closely with Spain’s leading publishers to make all reading content available through connected devices. The operator wants to speed up the adoption of this new reading experience as quickly as possible, providing greater access to books from anywhere and not limiting access to culture to just people who live in major cities.

As a leading technology and consumer company, Telefónica wants to contribute and help drive this transformation, and play a major role in developing the digital reading market in Spanish.
