Malaysian operator DiGi has experienced solid growth in mobile data revenues boosted by increased take-up of mobile data bundles. DiGi has 4.2 million mobile internet users out of a total user base of 8.8 million. The operator expects to continue to address the rising demand for mobile broadband services by prioritising network investments to expand its 3G/HSPA coverage from the current nationwide level of 50%.

DiGi.Com Berhad (DiGi) recorded solid growth momentum from data revenue precipitated by attractive mobile broadband offerings and higher take-up of smart-phone bundles, the company said when announcing its year-end financial results today.

Henrik Clausen, Chief Executive Officer of DiGi explained, "We tapped on the rapid increase in demand for quality internet access we saw in Malaysia during the year while at the same time continue to make inroads into previously underserved markets.

"We anticipated the needs of our customers well by making access to smart phones easier and affordable with applications that are relevant to our customer base. This stimulated increased usage from the larger subscriber base of 8.8 million, which in turn improved overall revenue contributions of data services.

"Today, we have 4.2 million internet users and we foresee demand for internet trending up from both existing and new customers."

On the outlook for 2011, DiGi will continue to actively address the rising demand for quality data services in Malaysia. Clausen said, "We will prioritise network investments which include growing our 3G/HSPA coverage from the current 50% nationwide to accelerate our reach, and to cater for higher speed capacity, reliability and quality of service. CAPEX will be in line with 2010 to support this."
Announcing its financial results for the year ended 31 December 2010, DiGi recorded data revenue growth of more than 20% year-on-year to RM1.2 billion. DiGi's total revenue surpassed RM5.4 billion, 10% higher than RM4.9 billion achieved in the preceding financial year.
