WEF in Davos: Swisscom Raises Data Speed on its Mobile Network |
www.swisscom.com
Swisscom has upgraded its mobile network in Davos with HSPA+
technology in time for the World Economic Forum (WEF). The upgrade has
doubled data capacity, boosting downlink data speeds in central Davos
up to 42 Mbps. The volume of data transmitted on Swisscom’s mobile
network has quadrupled over the past twelve months. The operator
expects this trend to continue, given the increasingly widespread use
of smartphones and laptops with mobile broadband access.
Use of Swisscom's mobile network increases enormously at events such
as the World Economic Forum. To avoid telephony and data transmission
bottlenecks, the company has vastly expanded the capacity of its
network in Davos and equipped transmitters with the latest HSPA+
technology. This will raise total capacity to a download speed of 42
Mbps and an upload speed of 5.6 Mbps, thereby doubling data capacity
and giving individual customers in the region higher surfing speeds and
allowing them to work as if at home. Mobile data transmission rates
this high are unrivalled in Switzerland and are still rare elsewhere in
Europe.
The volume of data transmitted on the Swisscom mobile network has
quadrupled over the past twelve months. This trend is set to continue
given the increasingly widespread use of smartphones and laptops with
mobile Internet access. The raising of the transmission speed for the
WEF in Davos is in keeping with the continuing expansion of the HSPA+
network. The months to come will see this expansion continue in those
places where data traffic volumes are highest, such as in tourist areas
and business centres. Swisscom invests hundreds of millions of francs
every year in its mobile infrastructure and is continually expanding
its network.
HSPA+ (High Speed Package Access) is a further development of the UMTS
mobile communication standard and currently permits speeds of up to 42
Mbps. Swisscom has equipped its entire UMTS network with turbo-speed
HSPA+ technology over the course of the past year. Around 93% of the
Swiss population can already enjoy mobile Internet access at bandwidths
of up to 7.2 Mbps, in some places even up to 21 Mbps. HSPA 42 Mbps
expansion will enable Swisscom to double its network capacity yet again
and provide an even faster mobile Internet experience to customers
with an appropriate device. Swisscom IT Services thus offers its
customers the best and most reliable connections in Switzerland, as
evidenced by a broad-based network test conducted by the specialist
magazine "connect" (11/2010 edition).
