America Movil has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s IP/MPLS-based mobile backhaul solution to support the upgrade of its 3G mobile broadband networks in 11 Latin American countries. The upgrade is aimed at the evolution of the networks into more cost-effective mobile infrastructure that enables the delivery of new multimedia services and applications. The move will prepare America Movil for the robust data growth anticipated over the next few years.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that America Movil, a leading mobile operator in Latin America, has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s IP/MPLS-based mobile backhaul solution to support next-generation mobile broadband services, including superior high-speed mobile Internet access to its mobile customers in 11 countries.

America Movil has deployed 3G networks throughout Latin America and is now evolving them to a more cost-effective mobile transport network infrastructure that supports current services while enabling the delivery of new multimedia services and applications. In preparation for the massive data growth expected over the next few years, America Movil selected Alcatel-Lucent to transform its transport networks in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

“By consolidating services over a single, packet-based network, America Movil will dramatically simplify operations and reduce operating expenditures as well as be able to offer its customers the highest quality and most advanced mobile IP services,” said Javier Rey, Alcatel-Lucent’s Vice-President for the America Movil account in the Caribbean and Latin America region. “Our industry-leading mobile backhaul solution, which has helped service providers worldwide transform their networks to all-IP, will enable America Movil to economically and efficiently upgrade its infrastructure.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s leadership in IP transformation will strengthen America Movil’s ability to offer its customers the best possible quality of experience, and also to prepare its network infrastructure to immediately launch next generation communication and data services.

As part of this three-year transformation project, Alcatel-Lucent is deploying its 7750 Service Router (SR) and 7705 Service Aggregation Router (SAR) along with the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM). The Alcatel-Lucent IP portfolio makes it possible for America Movil to deliver scalable, evolvable, cost-efficient and fully managed IP-based transport able to adapt to the expected increase in core traffic for years to come and to adapt to the advances brought about by the introduction of fourth-generation mobile technology.
