NEC Corporation has been conducting field trials of LTE technology for
KDDI, which is scheduled to launch commercially from end 2012. The LTE
trial started in October 2010 in an urban area with high population
density and a wide range of buildings, using the 1.5 GHz band. KDDI
will deploy its commercial LTE network in both 1.5 GHz and 800 MHz
bands. The Japanese operator plans to expand its mobile broadband
coverage to 96.5% by March 2015.
NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today its participation in
KDDI Corporation's (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and Chairman:
Tadashi Onodera; KDDI) field trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE), which
is scheduled for commercial operation from 2012.
This trial started in October 2010 from an urban area featuring high
population density, a wide range of buildings and using a 1.5GHz band,
the same band used in commercial services. The trial is being conducted
in an environment that is similar to commercial service conditions,
and includes handover performance testing in an urban area where a
broad spectrum of radio frequency interference occurs during throughput
verification of both uplink and downlink.
NEC also participated in a field trial conducted in the Nasu-Shiobara
area in Tochigi Prefecture from March to August, 2010. In addition to
handover testing, NEC conducted throughput verification during radio
frequency interference between base stations when the network was
congested.
KDDI is scheduled to begin commercial LTE services in December, 2012
using LTE systems at the 1.5GHz band and 800MHz band. Furthermore, the
company is planning to expand its broadband mobile telephone area
coverage to 96.5% by the end of the 2014 fiscal year (March 31, 2015).
NEC, as an official wireless base station vendor, will continue to
develop systems based on know-how fostered from these trials and to work
closely with KDDI for its LTE commercial services.
