Alliance demonstrates flexible migration path from GSM to near-3G services
Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) today announced that it is trialling its EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) solution within Orange Romania's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) network.
The announcement involves the trial of Motorola's EDGE solution with its Horizon base stations. It will demonstrate the company's ability to provide operators with the right mobile data solution for their market. Motorola's complete portfolio of infrastructure solutions are designed to support operators seeking migration from 2G to 3G services with, for example, its GPRS CS3/4 and EDGE technologies.
EDGE enables mobile date speeds between 120 to 180kBit/s. This enables mobile applications such as streaming video to become a reality once handsets become more readily available during 2004.
Margaret Rice-Jones, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola GTSS EMEA, said: "The work that we're doing in Romania is a natural development of our relationship with Orange Romania. We have supported their GSM services since 1997 and have worked closely to provide GPRS capabilities and ongoing network service support to the operator. EDGE can provide Orange with the flexibility it needs to offer innovative new data services to its Romanian customers."
Bernard Moscheni, CEO, Orange Romania, said: "Our goal is to ensure we offer the most innovative service to our customers while making sure that we maintain a realistic view of our capital expenditure. We look forward to building on our six-year relationship with Motorola as we continue to develop new and exciting services for our customers." |
