Poland’s Mobyland and its partner CenterNet have commercially launched their LTE network using 20 MHz in the 1800 MHz band. Huawei has supplied its end-to-end LTE/EPC (Long Term Evolution/Evolved Packet Core) solution for the deployment. The first phase of commercial LTE network rollout was carried out by software upgrades on Mobyland's existing 2G network, covering Poland's major cities, including Warsaw, Katowice and Lodz. Bt the end of 2010, the number of base stations in operation will reach 700 and the LTE network footprint will expand to cover over 7 million people. Currently, peak downlink speeds average 153 Mbps and uplink rates reach 48 Mbps. LTE 1800MHz is the first commercial LTE technology network in a harmonized frequency band of 1800MHz (band 3 according to the 3GPP standard) to be launched in Poland. The project is being developed by Mobyland Sp. z o.o. in cooperation with CenterNet S.A., which will allow the service to be commenced using the channel with the maximum standardized band of 20MHz. With the LTE 4G (3.9G) technology, previously unavailable flow capacities can be attained. They enable the use of such services as effective Internet access, online games, real-time videoconferencing or, in other words, the use of multimedia transmission. This is extremely important because the number of mobile broadband network users is surging. Cutting-edge technologies arrive to Poland The fourth generation (4G) network is considerably faster than the other networks being operated in Poland and, compared to HSPA+ or the older UMTS technologies, has minimum relay and a considerably increased user capacity. Thanks to its benefits, a fast, efficient and economically profitable transfer of large volume of data is possible with an optimum use of the frequency. The cutting-edge technology will ensure quick mobile access to the Internet and allow data download with an initial speed of 153 Mbps (and ultimately at 326 Mbps) and data upload of 48 Mbps (and ultimately at 86 Mbps). This is the fastest mobile Internet in Poland. The project “LTE 1800MHz” will be commenced in all locations where GSM 1800 has been in use, which means that the signal will be available both in large cities and smaller locations. “In August alone we filed 355 applications for radio frequency permits which we are most likely to obtain tomorrow. Our plans assume that at the end of 2010 the number of base stations in operation will reach 700 and the LTE network will cover over 7 million people,” says Adam Kuriański, the President of CenterNet and a board member of Mobyland. In future stages, the network will be developed in smaller locations to provide coverage to most mobile users in Poland. The network under development will increase the availability and quality of mobile Internet and the new technology will allow a fully effective use of its resources. It will also create demand for new services such as instant downloading of large files, viewing online Full HD movies and interactive services enhanced by good quality video transfers. In the opinion of Adam Kuriański, the President of CenterNet and a board member of Mobyland, “the project’s uniqueness consists of new technological solutions. LTE, the state-of-the-art technology operating on the basis of the harmonized 1800 MHz broadband, provides not only a higher speed of data download but also enables a better use of the telecommunications infrastructure than the solutions currently used by the other operators (HSPA+ in the 2100MHz band or LTE in the 2600MHz band).” Mobyland’s objective is to develop a wireless telecommunications network based on the newest fourth generation technology (LTE), which will replace existing solutions. The buildout of an independent network is made possible by radio frequencies held by Mobyland and its partner company CenterNet. In November 2007, Mobyland and CenterNet won a tender organized by the President of the Polish Electronic Communications Office and received dedicated frequencies in the 1800 MHz band. The LTE project of Mobyland and CenterNet allows them to make use of their radio resources in an innovative manner to implement the LTE technology, flexible both in terms of frequency and the channel width. To carry out the project Mobyland has selected Huawei as the supplier of its LTE technology network solutions. “As regards new generation mobile networks with an increased flow, the quality and flexibility of solutions and the stability of the radio transmissions ensured by Huawei is of major importance,” comments Andrzej Chajec, the President of Mobyland. Its investment in the 4G/LTE network, which uses the most modern telecommunications technology solutions, puts Poland among the most technologically advanced countries. Mobyland in cooperation with CenterNet will offer its clients access to interactive services which require high capacity (an increased data exchange), such as transmissions of video content, online games, multimedia solutions enabling cooperation in real time. The LTE technology is suited to the requirements of new and enhanced internet applications, which will allow users of smart phones, tablets or laptops to surf the web freely irrespective of where they are. Information about the companies Mobyland was established in December 2006 and operates as a limited liability company. Its objective is to develop a wireless telecommunications network based on the newest fourth generation technologies (LTE) which will replace the existing systems and equipment. The construction of an independent network is possible thanks to radio frequency reservations held by Mobyland: in November 2007 Mobyland won a tender organized by the President of the Polish Electronic Communications Office and obtained frequency reservations in the 1800 MHz band. Since July 2009 Mobyland is owned by Aero2 Sp. z o.o. At the end of August 2009 the company launched its commercial services.
Management Board of Mobyland:
CenterNet S.A., a subsidiary of NFI Midas, is the fifth
infrastructural mobile telephony operator in Poland. Concurrently with
Mobyland it won a tender organized by the Polish Office for Electronic
Communications in 2007 for a frequency reservation in the 1800 MHz
band. In May 2009 CenterNet launched its commercial services in the
GSM standard and currently has some 130,000 clients.
