Bulgaria’s Mobiltel has upgraded its network with Dual Carrier HSPA+ technology, enabling peak downlink speeds of up to 42 Mbps. The commercial launch of mobile broadband services based on Dual Carrier HSPA+ is planned in Sofia by the end of 2010. The operator will also expand its HSPA+ network, providing data transfer speeds of up to 21 Mbps beyond the capital to Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas by the end of August.

At a special demonstration today Mobiltel presented the highest speed of mobile data transfer through a 3G network ever acquired – 42 mb/s. Such speed in a mobile network has never been demonstrated until now and is very close to the one offered by the fixed Internet providers. It enabled the watching of 3D television through the network of the operator.
The new Dual Carrier HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) technology allows up to 42 mb/s and will be introduced in Sofia by at end of this year. It will provide a better Internet connection and twice higher speed of data download compared to the present one – up to 21 mb/s, which is also provided by Mobiltel only.

Thanks to the unique speed the customers of M-Tel will be able not only to surf the Internet with the speed of lightning, but also to watch 3D and High Definition TV channels through the mobile network of the company. If the time necessary to download a movie of 750 MB through UMTS is 4 hours and 45 minutes, through the new Dual Carrier HSPA+ it will take about 2 and a half minutes. With the HSPA+ technology a movie of the same size would be downloaded in 5 minutes and 16 seconds.

M-Tel introduced the HSPA+ technology which provides speed for data transfer up to 21 mb/s last year in Sofia. By the end of August this will happen also in Varna, Plovdiv and Burgas.

„Dual Carrier HSPA+ is a new break-through in the development of the Internet technologies. Its demonstration in Bulgaria ranks the country not only among the first ones in Europe, but in the world as well”, commented Andreas Maierhofer, Chief Executive Officer of M-Tel.

At the moment the Dual Carrier HSPA+ technology doesn’t have a trade start anywhere in the world. M-Tel will be among the first ones to offer its customers the possibility to surf with speed up to 42 mb/s and thus the company once again proves its position of an innovative leader on the Bulgarian market.
