NEC Corporation (NEC) has commenced shipment of Low-Power Radio Equipment (LRE) for NTT DoCoMo’s LTE base stations. NEC's LRE, which are compatible with NTT DoCoMo's LTE and W-CDMA standards, are low power wireless devices that are deployed indoors. They expand radio signal coverage to locations that outdoor base stations cannot access, such as basements and the high floors of large buildings.

NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the beginning of shipment of Low power Radio Equipment (LRE) for NTT DOCOMO, INC.'s (Headquarters: Tokyo, President and CEO: Ryuji Yamada, DOCOMO) LTE base stations.

LRE are low power wireless devices that are deployed indoors in order to expand the radio signal coverage to locations that outdoor base stations cannot access, such as basements and the high floors of large buildings. NEC's LRE are compatible with DOCOMO's LTE and W-CDMA standards.

The main features of LRE are as follows:

  • Small footprint and low power consumption

By newly introducing integrated digital signal processing module, the size of these LRE were reduced by approximately 35% and power consumption was reduced by more than 20% in comparison to existing products. Not only do these LRE help reduce the total cost of installation and operation, they also contribute to energy savings.

  • Supports connection to the widely used AC electric power

In addition to DC electric power, AC electric power is also supported. As a result of their support for both electric power standards, these LRE may be deployed in non DC power areas, such as commercial buildings and retail stores.

  • Accelerated communication speed through the adoption of MIMO

These LRE's adoption of MIMO has enabled faster and higher quality communications.
DOCOMO began trial of its LTE commercial network on June 8, 2010. NEC provided this network with a variety of products that include LTE base stations, radio equipment, core network equipment and switches. NEC was also selected as a development and manufacturing vender for DOCOMO's LTE mobile terminals.
Looking forward, NEC will continue contributing further to the worldwide development of next generation mobile infrastructure.
(*) MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output)
The use of multiple antennas for sending and receiving data. Dividing the data for transmission from multiple antennas using a single frequency increases the effective data transmission speed without changing the frequency used.
