The German mobile broadband spectrum auction of a total of 359.2 MHz of frequencies in the 800 MHz, 1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands has generated EUR4.38 billion. KPN’s German subsidiary won eight blocks, or 70 MHz of spectrum (19% of the auctioned amount) at the cost of EUR284 million. It has doubled the amount of spectrum owned by E-Plus. Vodafone won 12 blocks across all frequencies for EUR1.42 billion, while Telefónica O2 paid EUR1.38 billion for 11 blocks, and T-Mobile EUR1.3 billion for 10 blocks.

Today, the German spectrum auction for a total of 359.2MHz of frequencies has ended.
In line with the company’s expectations, KPN’s subsidiary E-Plus has been able to obtain a valuable combination of spectrum in various bands without additional rollout obligations.

The company’s value-driven approach has resulted in the acquisition of 70MHz of frequencies (19% of the auctioned amount) for a consideration of € 284m and this doubles the amount of spectrum for E-Plus. The company is particularly pleased with obtaining 2 additional blocks in the 2.1GHz band, resulting in 40MHz of adjacent spectrum. This additional spectrum can be used immediately in the current roll-out of HSPA+ and for upgrading to LTE in the future.

The acquired spectrum will decrease the cost for planned capacity and coverage increase in the years to come. It furthermore opens the scope for new and innovative services for E-Plus’ customers as well as for more value-creating partnerships.
