A white paper on deployment of UMTS in the 900 MHz band details new refarming technology for wireless operators to drive efficient spectrum utilization. The paper, from spectrum conditioning solutions provider ISCO International, proposes more efficient network planning techniques for controlling interference between 3G networks and GSM systems operating at the same frequency. ISCO’s Proteus solution enables mobile operators to reduce the cost of deploying the expanded coverage of 3G while maintaining 2G network assets.

Wireless operators can recover as much as 50 percent of the spectrum lost to transition zones when deploying UMTS at 900 MHz with legacy GSM networks, according to Sean Cordone, PhD, Vice President of Engineering at ISCO International. Dr. Cordone is the author of the whitepaper released today.

ISCO International, Inc. (OTC BB:ISOO.OB) is a leading provider of spectrum conditioning solutions for wireless carriers. Wireless operators worldwide will benefit from the content of this whitepaper identifying optimal use of wireless spectrum as they transition from 2G to 3G networks.

"Deployment of UMTS in the 900 MHz GSM band will be the route through which European operators will achieve near 100 percent population coverage for advanced 3G wireless services," Dr. Cordone said. "As wireless operators deploy UMTS systems, the interference between the new 3G network and the incumbent GSM system must be carefully controlled. Traditional network planning techniques for controlling this interference are very costly, since they require that substantial portions of valuable RF spectrum remain unused."

The whitepaper discusses technology currently in field trials of ISCO's recently announced ProteusTM, Digital RF Signal Processor. The Proteus solution offers a practical implementation of this technology that allows wireless carriers to significantly reduce the cost of deploying the expanded coverage of 3G while maintaining 2G network assets. The technology supports mixed UMTS/GSM network environments as well as the flexibility to support future technologies including UMTS, HSUPA, HSPA+, WiMAX and LTE.
The whitepaper is being released at the 3G Optimisation and UMTS Conference in Prague this week and will be available for download from the ISCO website at: www.iscointl.com/news_info.htm  Dr. Cordone is participating on the conference panel entitled "Comparing UMTS 900 to HSPA+ and LTE: Does UMTS 900 Emerge as the Low Cost Alternative?"
