Cosmote Romania has signed a contract with China’s ZTE to upgrade its network to 3G WCDMA/HSPA technology. The Chinese vendor will deploy its future-proof Software-Defined Radio (SDR) kit, which will enable the Romanian operator to seamlessly upgrade its GSM/UMTS network to HSPA+ and LTE in the future. As part of the deal, ZTE will deploy HSPA+ services for Cosmote across all major cities in Romania by the end of March 2010.

ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced it will build a UMTS network for COSMOTE Romania, a subsidiary of the COSMOTE Group. Deploying ZTE’s software-defined radio (SDR) technology the network will enable COSMOTE to carry out a seamless transition from GSM / UMTS to HSPA + and LTE.

By the end of March 2010, ZTE will help COSMOTE deploy HSPA+ services offering high-speed data services across all the major cities in Romania. In the meantime, ZTE’s tailor made network upgrade solution, based on equivalent public land mobile network (EPLMN) technology, will ensure continued services with minimal disruption for current network users.

OTE's mobile arm COSMOTE is the Balkan region’s largest multinational mobile operator. COSMOTE is based in Greece and operates in South-East European countries, including Greece, Bulgaria, Albania and Romania. Deutsche Telekom (Deutsche Telekom) is the largest shareholder of Greek OTE Group, holding 30% of its stake.

ZTE’s SDR platform has been implemented in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and many European countries, successfully helping its clients to achieve low OPEX. ZTE currently is conducting LTE trials with more than 10 operators worldwide, including Telefónica, Vodafone and CSL.
