South Africa’s Cell C plans to invest ZAR5 billion (US$600 million) in an HSPA+ upgrade scheduled for 2010. Currently, the operator is negotiating with equipment suppliers and will announce further details of its HSPA+ contract in early 2010. The move to HSPA+ technology will enable Cell C to provide peak downlink rates of up to 21 Mbps, which is three times faster than mobile broadband speeds currently available in the South African mobile market.

Mobile network operator, Cell C today announced that it will be investing R5 billion in the next year to expand its network coverage and rollout a high-speed broadband offering using HSPA+ technologies with download speeds of up to 21Mbit/s.
Cell C CEO Lars P Reichelt says that the company will be a significant broadband player in the market, offering 4G technologies at very high speeds.
"Currently the fastest 3G networks in South Africa offer speeds of 7,2Mbit/s. Cell C's network will offer download speeds that are three times faster than what is available in market today."
He says Cell C is still in negotiations with equipment manufacturers to build its HSPA+ network and more detail about its rollout plans will be made public early in 2010.
