Leveraging on the success of NEC Corporation (NEC) and Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens mobile) in building Hutchison's 3G networks in the UK and Italy, Hutchison 3G HK Limited (Hutchison 3G HK) has awarded a contract to NEC and Siemens mobile for the supply of the radio network of its third generation (3G) WCDMA-based network. Hutchison 3G HK targets to launch its 3 service in August 2003.
Under the contract, NEC and Siemens mobile provide the major component of the 3G network other than the core network and supply Hutchison 3G HK with a world-class and comprehensive 3G radio access network comprising radio network controllers, radio base stations and network management system on a turnkey basis. The NEC and Siemens mobile's infrastructure is based on WCDMA technology and is fully compliant to the international specifications set by the 3G Partnership Project (3GPP).
Over 1000 radio base stations have been installed by NEC and Siemens mobile across Hong Kong. These base stations include a number of micro node-B "NB-341", which are cost-effective, space-saving base stations optimal for the smooth deployment and rapid expansion of service areas. The micro-node-B is developed as part of the NEC-Siemens mobile alliance in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technologies.
Mrs. Agnes Nardi, Managing Director of Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited said, "We are pleased to have teamed up with NEC and Siemens mobile as our radio network suppliers following their successful deployment of Hutchison's 3G networks in the UK and Italy. With the installation of over 1000 radio base stations across Hong Kong, we will be offering our 3 customers with full coverage in the territory. As the largest mobile operator with 20 years extensive experience in Hong Kong's mobile industry, we will deliver the first 3G network in Hong Kong with a full range of robust and compelling new services." |
