www.smartone-vodafone.com SmarTone Macau has been awarded a 3G UMTS licence. The company plans to launch commercial 3G services in 2010. SmarTone Macau will invest over MOP180 million (US$23 million) in the rollout of its WDMA/HSPA network by 2013 to offer a range of advanced 3G multimedia services. The operator expects to leverage the 3G experience of its parent company in Hong Kong, where SmarTone-Vodafone provides HSPA services and plans to upgrade its network to HSPA+ before moving to LTE. SmarTone Macau, a subsidiary of SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Limited, plans to launch advanced and innovative 3G services for Macau consumers in 2010 with the award of a 3G licence by the Bureau of Telecommunications Regulation (DSRT). SmarTone Macau will invest over MOP 180 million in the first four years to build an advanced 3G network and to provide a wide range of 3G services, bringing enormous values to the Macau community as a whole. “The 3G licence will enable us to introduce more effective competition in the Macau market by offering unique 3G multimedia services which are more compelling than those currently available,” said Mr. Douglas Li, CEO of SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Limited. Leveraging on the Group’s leadership in mobile and broadband services in Hong Kong, SmarTone Macau is in a very strong position to provide relevant and compelling 3G services in Macau. SmarTone Macau welcomes DSRT’s effort to start liberalising the local and international leased-line market in 2010 so as to rectify the unfair regulatory regime currently enjoyed by the incumbent integrated operator. In order for Macau consumers to enjoy more choices of advanced multimedia and broadband services at competitive prices, it is critical for DSRT to continue to drive down the costs of local leased-line and international Internet access, commensurate with international norm. “Our 3G investment in Macau demonstrates our long term commitment to the markets where we operate and also provides long term value to our shareholders,” said Mr. Li. |
