The U.S. mobile phone chip maker Qualcomm has welcomed Japan’s achievement of exceeding 100 million 3G subscribers in April. According to the figures released by Japan’s Telecommunications Carriers Association http://www.tca.or.jp/english/database/2009/04/index.html), the total number of mobile customers in Japan reached 107.5 million, of which 99.6 million were 3G users. Of the total number of 3G users, 69.1 million were on WCDMA networks run by NTT DoCoMo, Softbank and Emobile, while 30.5 million on KDDI’s CDMA2000 1x network.

3G CDMA service in Japan started with the launch of the world's first WCDMAcommercial service by NTT DOCOMO, INC. in October 2001, followed by the CDMA2000® 1X launch by KDDI CORPORATION in April 2002, the WCDMA launch by SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. in December 2002, and the HSDPAlaunch by EMOBILE Ltd. in March 2007.
