Starent Networks, the US-based provider of mobile broadband solutions, has been selected by mobilkom austria group, to deliver a multimedia core solution across its European footprint for UMTS and LTE mobile broadband services. mobilkom’s two units, mobilkom austria and Croatia’s Vipnet, will deploy the Starent solution in 2009, with other subsidiaries across Central and Eastern Europea expected to follow in the coming years. Starent Networks’ solutions will be deployed by Kapsch CarrierCom.
Starent Networks, Corp. (Nasdaq: STAR), a leading provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver broadband multimedia services, today announced mobilkom austria group (mag) has selected Starent’s multimedia core solution for deployment in its mobile operator member companies across Europe for UMTS and LTE mobile broadband services. Starent is working with Kapsch CarrierCom, Austria for the solution deployment.
mag is a leading mobile service provider in Central and Eastern Europe. The group connects around 18 million mobile customers in eight countries. mobilkom austria and Vipnet from Croatia will deploy the Starent solution in 2009. Other mobilkom austria group members will follow in the coming years.
mag will initially use Starent’s GGSN solution on the ST40 multimedia core platform to enable high-speed multimedia services such as video and Internet on its 3G/UMTS networks. The ability to easily migrate the Starent multimedia core platform to the 4G/LTE Evolved Packet Core (EPC) was a key element in the selection decision by mag.
“As we continue to evolve our networks to accommodate subscriber demand for high bandwidth services, we seek out industry leaders like Starent to provide us with superior technology,” said Johann Pichler, Group CTO, of mag. “Additionally, the Starent solutions are software upgradeable, which will provide our operator companies with a significant competitive advantage as they migrate to 4G.”
Kapsch CarrierCom is already providing several solutions to mag, such as UMTS, NGIN and R4 and will manage the deployment, integration and support of the Starent products.
“This is a great new partnership for us because Starent’s GGSN solution is very innovative. As a company, we have a multi vendor focus and are once again proud to work together with a partner who can deliver state of the art solutions to our customers,” said Thomas Schapf, Member of the Board, Kapsch CarrierCom AG.
“The mobilkom austria group has a strong focus on delivering leading-edge services to their subscribers,” said Ashraf Dahod, president and chief executive officer of Starent. “We are very pleased to help the multiple operating properties to build out a high-performance, highly intelligent network that can meet the ever increasing demand of their subscribers.”
Starent Networks has led the 3G market to deploying the next generation core, while also positioning the network to be readily upgradeable to 4G/LTE. Starent’s solutions already include many of the elements required of the 4G network, including integrated intelligence, simplified network architecture, high bandwidth performance capabilities, carrier-class reliability and enhanced mobility. Furthermore, Starent’s solutions are capable of supporting multiple functions in a single node, allowing a single platform to concurrently act as a 2G/3G and 4G node. Starent’s solutions are designed to be evolutionary, deployed through software upgrades. This approach is intended to protect operators with investments in 3G while eliminating the need for forklift upgrades.
