Nextivity Inc., a leading developer of in-building coverage technology, today announced that 3 will deploy its SMART Repeater solution as a fundamental element of Ireland's National Broadband Scheme. The inclusion of Nextivity's SMART Repeater devices in 3's winning bid will ensure that subscribers enjoy the highest data rates possible, even within the indoor environments that challenge many traditional wireless networks.

"We are very pleased to see our indoor coverage solution contribute to the noble mission of delivering high speed broadband services to every Irish community," said Nextivity CEO Werner Sievers. "Our SMART Repeater technology is designed to overcome the most demanding indoor coverage challenges and increase the effective RF capacity of each base station."
3, a Hutchison Whampoa company, was recently appointed as the broadband provider for Ireland's National Broadband Scheme by the Ministry of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources at the conclusion of a competitive tendering process. The scheme is a government-backed initiative which aims to see high-speed broadband services available in all areas of the country by 2010.

Announcing the scheme, Minister Ryan said, "For too long, rural Ireland has been without this essential service. Now businesses throughout the country can have ready access to the national and international markets. Employment will be created and sustained. Quality of life will improve for rural residents and communities will be strengthened.
"This contract represents real value for public money. I congratulate 3 on winning this contract and look forward to them meeting the challenging, but achievable coverage targets."

Robert Finnegan, Chief Executive of 3, commented: "3 is delighted to have won the NBS tender--it's great news for 3 and for rural Ireland. We'll be rolling out our first-class broadband network bringing internet services to thousands of homes and businesses across the country. Over five years we'll be investing 223 million euros and creating around 170 new jobs giving Ireland's economy a welcome boost. We are delighted to be offering Nextivity's SMART Repeater solution for enhanced data performance in difficult-to-reach areas--it's a world-class, innovative solution."

The Nextivity solution will work in harmony with 3's 3G wireless network to maximize the data rates and voice quality experienced by users while indoors. With advanced filtering, equalization and echo cancellation techniques, Nextivity's SMART Repeater delivers unprecedented in-building data rates and pervasive 3G connectivity. Nextivity SMART repeaters dynamically sense and react to the wireless environments found in homes and businesses and can increase the available in-building bandwidth. Designed with smart antenna technology and an intelligent onboard processor, Nextivity's SMART Repeaters continually seek out the best available signal and automatically adjust to maximize the signal gain to the user.

The winning tender from 3 includes 3G network infrastructure technology from Nextivity Inc., Nokia Siemens Networks, and Avanti in conjunction with network rollout partners BT Ireland.
