Vodafone Netherlands has started the upgrade of its HSPDA network to provide a peak theoretical downlink rate of 7.2 Mbps and peak HSUPA uplink rate of 1.4 Mbps. The operator will enable the increased download speed first in Amsterdam, with remaining parts of the country to follow. The peak HSUPA uplink rate of 1.4 Mbps already covers 90% of the population, which will be gradually increased further. Vodafone Netherlands increases the speed of its data network. Downlink for mobile broadband on laptops increases to a peak theoretical rate of 7.2 Mbps while the uplink increase to a peak theoretical rate of 1.4 Mbps. With these peak theoretical rates, presentations or audio files of 4MB can be downloaded within 5 seconds and sent within 25 seconds. The increased download speed will first be available in Amsterdam. The rest of De Randstad and the Netherlands will follow. The HSUPA peak theoretical rate of 1.4 Mbps already delivers population coverage of 90% and this capacity will gradually be increased further. Ger Coolen, Director Technology, Vodafone Netherlands: “As a result of changing life and work patterns, we see that mobile working - and mobile broadband on the laptop in general – becomes more popular. Customers using mobile broadband expect a similar experience as via their fixed connection at work or at home. This speed increase builds on this experience, since with common online activities such as visiting websites, mailing or chatting, people will not notice the difference.” As of today, customers with a ‘maximum speed’ subscription for mobile broadband on the laptop will get the increased speed, depending on their location and hardware. The speeds for ‘fixed cost’ subscriptions and the Zorgeloos Internet BloX for mobile internet on the handset remain unchanged. To get a feel of the difference in speed please see the animation on our website.
