|TDC turbocharges its mobile network|
|Tuesday, 08 January 2008|
As of today, TDC offers its customers broadband access via the mobile network with Turbo 3G (HSDPA). Turbo 3G is initially being launched in the cities on the islands of Bornholm, Zealand and Funen and in Southern Jutland where TDC already has 3G coverage. Turbo 3G will be expanded to cover the rest of Jutland by the end of March 2008 at the latest.
“With Turbo 3G, users can surf the Internet or check their email just as easily as they are used to at home or work. Turbo 3G meets our customers’ needs for simple and useful data solutions where the data speed is not seen as a barrier. At the same time, we offer both our business and residential customers simple and manageable prices for the use of the data solutions,” says TDC’s mobile president, Mads Middelboe.
TDC is investing DKK 2 billion to ensure that, in three years’ time, 99 per cent of all Danes can be online in 99 per cent of Denmark while on the move. With the launch of Turbo 3G, TDC is taking a major step in that direction. At least 80 per cent of the population will have access to Turbo 3G by the end of 2008. Concurrently with this, TDC’s network will be expanded so that the geographical areas not covered by 3G/Turbo 3G will be covered by EDGE. In addition, TDC’s customers already have access to more than 700 hotspots all over the country.
“Unlike the present 3G coverage, which is mainly used by TDC’s business customers, we are now expecting both the business and residential markets to really start demanding the new fast data speed. Content services such as music and TV on the mobile will drive the data usage, and we also expect that the demand for fast mobile access to the company’s systems will increase the demand for Turbo 3G,” says Mads Middelboe.
Initially, TDC will only be offering subscriptions with download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps. But, generally, with Turbo 3G, TDC is increasing download speeds from the present max. 384 kbps to max. 3 Mbps in the centres of Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg and max. 1.5 Mbps in the other cities. The new Turbo 3G subscriptions also include free usage via the more than 700 hotspots found throughout Denmark.
