Packet Switched
 Acronym
 Term Packet Switched

Description Packet switched networks transmit data as a series of relatively small packets of digital information, each identified by a unique header that provides information about that packets intended destination. An inherent advantage of packet networks is their ability to route fragments of data over different networks and even at different times before it is reassembled at its destination. This approach provides greater reliability and robustness of transmission compared with circuit switched networks, as well as greater efficiency since data packets from many different conversations or file transfers can be squeezed simultaneously into the same communications channel.
