UMTS Forum Chairman Jean-Pierre Bienaim has underlined the benefits of 3G/UMTS evolution to China's mobile operators, customers and national economy.

Speaking at The 5th Annual 3G Mobile International Summit China, organised by IIR and taking place on 1- 2 June 2004 in Beijing, Bienaim urged China to follow other markets such as Europe that have already licensed 3G/UMTS in IMT-2000 spectrum bands and are now launching networks commercially.

Chairing a panel session at the same event, Bienaim also discussed the role of TD-SCDMA using 'home grown' technology by Chinese manufacturers as a potential complement to WCDMA deployments in FDD paired spectrum.
