Vodafone is stepping up the pace of progress again with the new Mobile Connect Card UMTS Broadband. The Dsseldorf-based mobile communications provider is the first German network operator to launch a UMTS data card that is designed for compact ExpressCard slots. These special slots are increasingly being incorporated in modern notebooks. The new Mobile Connect Card UMTS Broadband now also theoretically supports mobile data transmission rates of up to 3.6 megabits per second via UMTS broadband. Orders for the cards can be placed with Vodafone now, and the cards will be available from early October onwards.

The new data card is an extremely compact ExpressCard in triband technology weighing only 39 grams. It also comes with an adaptor for use in classic PCMCIA type II slots.

Vodafone's UMTS broadband network, which is available in several hundred towns and cities, can now theoretically realise transmission rates of up to 3.6 Mbit/s. Customers in Dsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Frankfurt or Stuttgart, for instance, can achieve everyday mobile transmission rates of up to 2.8 Mbit/s. The new technology is gradually being introduced in the Vodafone UMTS network. Today, the UMTS network already provides coverage in over 2000 German towns and cities. A software update option will make potential future transmission speeds of up to 7.2 Megabit/s via the Vodafone UMTS broadband network possible. Outside the regions with UMTS broadband coverage, the Mobile Connect Card UMTS Broadband (Express) uses normal UMTS or GPRS connections for data transmission in the Vodafone network.

The new Mobile Connect Card UMTS Broadband (Express) comes with comprehensive documentation and software. It's very easy to install and operate and supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems. End-to-end encryption ensures maximum security when the card is used in virtual private networks (VPN).

The Mobile Connect Card UMTS Broadband (Express) only costs one euro in conjunction with the conclusion of a Vodafone contract for a Vodafone Business-DataPro8 data card. The basic monthly rate is EUR 9.28 if a data tariff option is booked. Without a Vodafone card contract, the Mobile Connect Card UMTS Broadband (Express) costs EUR 399.90 Euro (including VAT).
