Mobile Internet access over first HSDPA network in Croatia was presented today by Vipnet at the press conference in the scope of Microsoft's Windays Conference. For Internet access over the HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) network Vipnet already offer data card Vodafone Mobile Connect UMTS+EDGE, and from today all Vip's customers can easily upgrade VMC UMTS+EDGE data card to the HSDPA technology at no extra charges at http://vmc.vipnet.hr. Vipnet continues so, with the mobile broadband Internet access and the HSDPA data card, the evolution of the 3G network, as the innovative leader on the Croatian market.
- Vipnet is the only operator offering to the customers a combination of the 3G networks EDGE and UMTS and to more than 90 percent of the population. By launching the HSDPA network we confirmed once more that we always place the customers in the center of everything we do, because we are making it possible for them to get an even more pleasant experience of the mobile broadband Internet access. Thanks to speeds increased by four to seven times compared to UMTS and EDGE, with a laptop and a HSDPA data card customers can easily work, use their e-mail or surf the Internet wherever and whenever they want - emphasized Marie-Helene Magenschab, CEO of Vipnet and explained that present Vip data tariffs Mobile broadband 128 and Mobile broadband 512 will not be changed.
The HSDPA technology will be the leading technology in the forthcoming couple of years and the estimates are that it will have approximately 40 million users in Europe in the course of 2006. Vip's HSDPA network is available in Zagreb, Rijeka and Opatija, and it enables mobile surfing at a speed of over 1.5 Mbit/s in download and up to 384 kbit/s in upload. Accordingly, for instance, one minute will be sufficient to download a 10 MB document from the Internet via the HSDPA network.
In addition to surfing and downloading files from the Internet, the HSDPA network enables a significantly more comfortable work with "real time" applications, such as access to e-mail via the MS Outlook application, use of Instant Messenger, access to shared maps ... The credits for that go to the improvement of the Round Trip Time (RTT) parameters, i.e. the time required for an information package to pass the computer-network-computer communications circuit. The RTT in the HSDPA network is approximately 60 ms, twice faster than in UMTS, which is sufficient for a comfortable mobile work or entertainment over the Internet.
- The HSDPA technology is an upgrade of the package part of the UMTS network, i.e. what the EDGE technology represents for GPRS. So, HSDPA is using the same radio-frequency spectrum and channel width as UMTS, so that no special license is required for HSDPA. The advanced modulation of the radio signal makes it possible to transfer twice more data through the air than the existing UMTS modulation, and the HSDPA network is also "more intelligent" and speedier in analyzing the signals and adjusting the network parameters - said Mladen Pejkovic, member of the Management Board and CTO of Vipnet.
Some of the technical novelties, which are introduced by HSDPA, are the sharing of the same resources for all the users of a particular cell, an exceptionally rapid adjustment of the link by changing, for instance, the number of protective bits subject to the current quality of the connection; there are also advanced techniques to repair data received by mistake, as well as the new radio modulation (16QAM), which transfers twice more bits by symbol than the existing UMTS modulation (QPSK). All the logic of the advanced processing of the signal is implemented at the level of the base station, reason why the whole process (analysis and decision-making regarding the action required on the network and the performance of this action) is exceptionally rapid and occurs at intervals of 2 ms only.
