TelCell Gears up to Offer Faster Mobile Broadband on St Maarten
TelCell St Maarten has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to provide the complete network infrastructure for the roll out of its HSPA network. NSN will supply the Caribbean operator with radio equipment, including its Flexi Multiradio Base Stations, as well as the core network, including mobile softswitches and media gateways. TelCell St Maarten, which operates in the Netherlands Antilles, is expected to launch HSPA services by the end of April 2011. 

Windows Phone, Kinect Exemplify New Usage Scenarios and Device Capabilities at MIX11
Microsoft has showcased a new version of its Windows Phone operating system, which will be released for new and existing handsets during 2011. The free developer tools for the new Windows Phone OS will be available in May, enabling developers to take advantage of new features, such as application multitasking for background processing, audio and file transfer, fast application switching, deeper phone integration, access to the camera and Motion Sensor library.

T-Mobile USA Introduces New Unlimited Data, Calling and Texting Plan for Only US$79.99 per Month
T-Mobile USA has introduced a new more affordable unlimited plan, branded Even More, with unlimited nationwide calls, texts and data access. The service is available for US$79.99 per month, enabling customers to use mobile data on their smartphones without incurring any overage charges. Consumers exceeding 2 GB of mobile data usage per billing month will still have access to unlimited data at reduced speeds until their new billing cycle starts. On average, T-Mobile HSPA+ smartphone customers consume about 1 GB of data per billing month.

HTC Unveils Multimedia Superphone, the HTC Sensation
HTC has unveiled its new high-end smartphone, the HTC Sensation. Powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, the Android 2.3 handset is equipped with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, an 8-megapixel camera with Full HD video capture and stereo sound, video editing and support for content sharing via DNLA. The Sensation also features an upgraded version of HTC’s Sense user interface. The HSPA smartphone will be available in the US exclusively from T-Mobile USA at the end of June 2011, while in Europe it will launch with Vodafone.

Nokia Strengthens Smartphone Portfolio with Two New Products and a Renewed User Experience
Nokia has launched two new HSPA smartphones, the Nokia E6 and Nokia X7, both featuring an upgraded version of the Symbian mobile operating system. Enhancements include new icons and usability improvements, such as easier text input, a faster browser and expanded Ovi Maps, as well as enterprise grade security and new e-mail features, such as full meeting request support. The Nokia E6, which has a full QWERTY keypad and a high resolution touch display, is aimed at business users. The entertainment-oriented Nokia X7 features a 4-inch display and 8-megapixel camera.

NTT DOCOMO Selects Gemalto for Japan's First LTE Commercial Roll-Out
NTT DOCOMO has selected Gemalto’s LTE digital security solution, which will be implemented across the operator’s LTE network. The Gemalto solution with Universal Integrated Circuit Cards (UICC) will enhance the security and reliability of NTT DOCOMO’s multimedia services offered to its LTE customers.  Over the next three years, more than 15 million NTT DOCOMO mobile subscribers will be progressively equipped with the LTE UICC. The Japanese operator already offers LTE services, branded Xi, in major cities including Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka.

Epitiro Confirms ‘Real World’ LTE Broadband and Voice Quality
Fixed and mobile broadband analysis specialist Epitiro has completed an independent speed, latency and quality-of-experience tests of TeliaSonera’s LTE network in Finland. Epitiro’s analysis has established that the operator’s LTE network recorded peak broadband download speeds of 48 Mbps, while mean latency measured 23 ms. TeliaSonera’s Finnish LTE service is capable of handling bandwidth-intensive web-based applications, including VoIP, video streaming and HD IPTV.

First LTE Mobile Devices Achieve GCF Certification
The Global Certification Forum (GCF) has officially certified two LTE devices: Samsung’s GT-B3740 USB modem and the LG FM300 Xenon LTE-connected Wi-Fi router. Both devices operate in the 800 MHz spectrum (Band 20) – Europe’s Digital Dividend band. GCF Certification ensures that new devices are compliant with relevant standards and interoperable with network systems irrespective of infrastructure vendor. The scheme reduces acceptance testing overheads for manufacturers and operators, accelerating the development of LTE devices for the mass-market.

dtac Launches 3G HSPA Service on 850 MHz with a Bt 1.2 Billion Investment
Total Access Communication (dtac) has announced plans to invest 1.2 billion Baht (US$40 million) to upgrade its network to HSPA, using the 850 MHz frequency band. The Thai operator will deploy HSPA technology at up to 1,220 base stations across the country. The upgrade is dtac’s response to increasing demand for mobile broadband services in Thailand.

nTelos Wireless and Alcatel-Lucent Complete Field Trial of End-to-End 4G LTE Network
Integrated service provider nTelos Wireless and Alcatel-Lucent have completed an end-to-end LTE field trial in Waynesboro, Virginia. Alcatel-Lucent provided its end-to-end integrated solution, including LTE base stations (eNodeBs), the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), IP service routing network elements, as well as operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) systems. The trial is part of nTelcos Wireless’ plans to incorporate LTE technology into its existing CDMA infrastructure.
