Sierra Wireless Adds to AirCard Product Portfolio with Five New Products for HSPA and HSPA+ Networks
Canadian wireless solutions provider Sierra Wireless has added five new products, including HSPA and HSPA+ devices, to its AirCard line of data cards and USB modems for mobile broadband networks. The AirCard USB 301 and USB 302 are two new HSPA-enabled USB modems, which offer peak download speeds of 7.2 Mbps and peak upload speeds of 5.76 Mbps on an HSPA network. The HSPA+ lineup includes the AirCard USB 308, USB 309 and the AirCard 503, enabling peak downlink transfer rates of 21 Mbps.
Orange and Apple Have Reached an Agreement to Bring iPhone 3G and 3GS to Orange UK Customers Later This Year
Orange has signed an agreement with Apple to distribute the iPhone in the U.K., after O2’s two-year exclusivity on the device. Orange will offer the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS before the end of 2009 in all of its direct channels, including Orange shops, the Orange webshop, telesales channels and selected high street partners. Customers can pre-register their interest on a dedicated website. With the addition of the U.K., Orange now offers the iPhone in 28 countries and territories across Africa and Europe.
Consultation on the Assignment of the 800 MHz Band in Sweden
Sweden's telecoms regulator (PTS) has opened a public consultation on the future use of the 800 MHz spectrum, which became available as part of the digital switchover in October 2007. The move is also designed to survey the interest of the market players in the 790–862 MHz band. If the demand for the digital dividend spectrum exceeds availability, the 800 MHz licences will be assigned through an auction. This is likely to start before the summer of 2010, with the allocation of licences planned during the third quarter of 2010.
Vodafone to Sell iPhone in UK and Ireland
Vodafone has reached an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in the U.K. and Ireland from early 2010. Vodafone’s announcement follows Orange’s iPhone deal with Apple. Vodafone’s customers in the U.K. and Ireland can register their interest in the device online from 29 September. The operator will unveil pricing, tariffs and availability locally in the future. With the addition of the U.K. and Ireland, Vodafone will now sell the iPhone through 13 of its operating companies globally.
T-Mobile USA Announces Upcoming Availability of Motorola CLIQ with MOTOBLUR
T-Mobile USA, part of Deutsche Telekom, will pre-sell Motorola’s first Android smartphone to existing customers from 19 October. The HSDPA-enabled device, which features Motorola’s new Motoblur user interface, will be marketed in the U.S. under the name CLIQ. The CLIQ will be available exclusively to eligible T-Mobile customers for US$199.99 on a two-year contract.
Telefónica Drives Fourth Generation Mobile Technology By Commissioning Six Advanced Pilot Trials
Telefónica O2 has invited six major equipment vendors to conduct LTE (Long Term Evolution) field trials in six countries within the operator’s global footprint. The chosen suppliers are Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) and ZTE, but trials are still open to other infrastructure providers. The six-month project, which also includes laboratory tests and installation of e-node base stations in the field, will test vendors’ respective LTE technologies. The trials, which will help Telefónica O2 to define its commercial LTE strategy and rollout timeline, will take place in Spain, the U.K., Germany, the Czech Republic, Argentina and Brazil.
O2 Germany Completes Live Network Upgrade with Huawei’s SingleRAN Solution
Huawei has completed a GSM/WCDMA network upgrade for Telefónica O2 Germany, in which 5,199 base stations were replaced.Under the terms of the existing contract, Huawei will also deliver an additional 3,000 base stations to the operator as part of its network expansion. Telefónica O2 Germany has selected Huawei's SingleRAN solution for its GSM/UMTS converged network in the southern region of Germany, covering major cities such as Munich and Stuttgart.
Hutchison 3G Austria Modernizes its Network for HSPA+ and LTE
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has been contracted by Hutchison 3G to modernise its Austrian network. The upgrade, which will start during the third quarter of 2009, will ready Hutchison 3G’s WCDMA/HSPA network in Austria for the deployment of HSPA+ in early 2010 and LTE in 2011. It will also improve the system’s energy efficiency. NSN will help the Austrian operator prepare for rising demand in data traffic and multimedia services.
