A1 Telekom Austria Continues Evaluation of LTE
Telekom Austria continues its tests of LTE technology, which will be deployed by the operator once spectrum for LTE becomes available in Austria. In the meantime, Telekom Austria continues to roll out HSPA+ in the A1 network. At present, approximately 1,000 base stations are equipped with  HSPA+ technology and are connected to Telekom Austria’s high capacity fiber optics network.
Vodafone Introduces Portable Mobile Wi-Fi and Mobile Broadband Device
Vodafone has launched its new Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certified Mobile Wi-Fi device, the R201. The R201 enables up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices to simultaneously share digital content, as well as internet access via a Vodafone Mobile Broadband connection. The R201 comes with embedded DLNA software, which allows customers to view their digital content across all DLNA compatible devices, including laptops, netbooks, mobile phones, gaming devices, TVs and radios. The device will be available in selected countries where Vodafone operates during 2010.
Reserving the Band 2500–2690 MHz for the London 2012 Games
UK regulator Ofcom is considering plans to make the 2500-2690 MHz (2.6 GHz) frequency band temporarily available for wireless cameras and broadcasting use during the London 2012 Games. Ofcom anticipates that demand for access to the spectrum suited to wireless camera applications will be exceptionally high, while mobile broadband data services are not likely to be widely deployed before the Games. A final decision will take effect following a four-week consultation period.
Tata Teleservices Selects Nokia Siemens Networks for 3G
India’s Tata Teleservices (TTSL) has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to deploy its 3G WCDMA/HSPA+ network. Under the terms of the contract, NSN will supply its compact, energy-efficient and LTE-ready Flexi Multiradio Base Stations. The vendor will also provide network implementation and managed services, as well as its NetAct network management system to monitor, manage and optimize the 3G/HSPA+ network, and supply other operational support systems. NSN will be able to support TTSL immediately thanks to its local 3G manufacturing facility at Chennai. TTSL won 3G spectrum in nine of India’s telecom circles earlier this year.
Intel and Nokia Create First Joint Laboratory
Intel, Nokia and the University of Oulu have established their first joint research lab, the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center. The new lab, part of Intel’s European Research Network, aims to create new and compelling mobile user experiences that leverage the rapidly increasing capabilities of mobile devices. The centre will support the Linux-basedMeeGo open source platform recently launched by Intel and Nokia, which offers great flexibility for developing new 3D experiences on mobile devices.
Telenor Hungary Commissions ZTE to Build Hungary's first LTE-ready Network
Telenor Hungary has contracted ZTE to build a GSM/UMTS/LTE network. Under the terms of the agreement, ZTE will expand and operate the mobile broadband network, deploying over 6,000 base stations throughout the country. With its SDR-based solution, the Chinese vendor will help Telenor Hungary achieve a unified 2G/3G/LTE core network, supporting multi-mode and multi-band wireless services. ZTE’s technology eliminates the need for further infrastructure upgrades, giving the operator flexibility to roll out new services with a smooth evolutionary path to LTE.
TELUS Now Offers Services on the Biggest 3G+ Network in Saskatchewan
Canada’s TELUS has rolled out its HSPA+ network in Saskatchewan, offering peak downlink speeds of up to 21 Mbps to customers in the region. Among the HSPA+ enabled devices offered by TELUS are the HTC Desire, the MOTOROLA CHARM, the INQ CHAT 3G. As part of the company's investment in its HSPA+ infrastructure this year, TELUS has entered into an enhanced network sharing agreement with the regional operator SaskTel. The deal facilitates deployment of next generation wireless voice and data services for TELUS customers in Saskatchewan while optimising cell-site utilisation.
TeliaSonera’s 4G Services Now Live in Gothenburg
TeliaSonera's Swedish subsidiary Telia has expanded its LTE network in Sweden’s second largest city, Gothenburg, with radio equipment provided by Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). During the pre-launch tests, average downlink rates of 85-90 Mbps were reached, peaking at 100 Mbps. In the uplink, maximum speeds of 30 Mbps were recorded. Telia plans to roll out LTE services to Sweden’s 25 largest cities during 2010. NSN is supplying Telia with its Flexi Multiradio Base Stations under the two-year radio network contract, plus NetAct network management system to monitor, manage and optimise the operator’s multi-vendor network.
Movistar Chile to Offer Higher Speed Mobile Broadband
Movistar Chile, part of Telefónica, has selectedNokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to upgrade its network with HSPA+ technology in an attempt to boost network capacity and performance, while paving the way to LTE. The move will increase peak downlink speeds offered by the Chilean operator to 21 Mbps and peak uplink rates to 5.8 Mbps. As part of the agreement, NSN will enhance the operator’s network management system based on NetAct. The contract also involves network implementation services, software upgrade and implementation, apart from network monitoring to ensure optimum network performance and service quality.
