Alcatel-Lucent Cooperates with Telecom Italia to Enable New Generation Mobile Network
Telecom Italia and Alcatel-Lucent have announced plans to conduct LTE trials as part of their new joint technology development program, which is aimed at assessing the evolution of mobile networks by optimising investments. The program focuses on untapping the full potential of new mobile broadband services while reducing time to market. The tests, which will be conducted by TI Lab and Bell Labs, will use small cell solutions (pico cells) to address hot spot and indoor coverage applications, and their related throughput and latency performance.
Motorola's WBR 700 Series 2nd Generation LTE eNodeB Provides Unprecedented Capacity to Deliver Enhanced Mobile Broadband Experiences
Motorola has launched its latest LTE solution, the WBR 700 Series LTE eNodeB, which is one of the industry’s smallest and most energy efficient base stations. Motorola's new WBR 700 Series will support FDD as well as TD-LTE solutions in a wide variety of frequencies from 700MHz to 2.6GHz. The solution features an LTE baseband that has up to four times the capacity of the average LTE baseband currently on the market, enabling the deployment of multiple antenna schemes that support higher throughput to deliver superior mobile broadband experiences.
HTC Unveils Enhanced HTC Sense Experience on New Android Smartphones
HTC has unveiled two new HSPA 7.2 touchscreen smartphones, the HTC Legend and HTC Desire, both powered by Google’s Android 2.1 operating system. The devices run on the updated version of HTC Sense user interface, which features the Friend Stream application, providing a greater integration of the user’s multiple social network activity. The HTC Legend, with its 3.2 inch AMOLED HVGA display, will be available from April (in Europe through Vodafone). The HTC Desire, with its3.7 inch AMOLED WVGA display and Qualcomm’s 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, will be available to in Europe and Asia in early Q2. 
Huawei to Launch World’s First HSPA+ Android Smartphone
Huawei has unveiled the world’s first Android handset based on HSPA+ technology as part of its line-up of four new Android-based devices. The U8800 smartphone runs on Google’s Android 2.1 operating system and integrates HSPA+ capabilities to support downlink speeds of up to 14 Mbps. The device, which features a 3.8-inch screen, will be available in the third quarter of 2010.
Telefónica Presents the First 3G USB Modem with Unlimited Storage Capacity Based on Cloud Computing Technology
Telefónica has unveileda prototype HSPA+ mobile broadband USB modem, which allows data and content to be stored online via the cloud. Supporting downlink speeds of up to 21 Mbps, the device, branded the 3GBox, allows users to download, upload, store and recover unlimited content. In addition, Telefónica’s 3GBox offers users access to value added services, which include the possibility to share their content with contacts, see videos uploaded to the web folder via streaming and listen to music.
Telstra Launches World's First HSPA+ Dual Carrier Network
Australia’s Telstra has completed the upgrade of its existing HSPA+ network with Dual Carrier technology, implemented by Ericsson.The move boosts the peak downlink speeds on its Next G network to 42 Mbps thanks to the simultaneous use of two channels to send and receive data. The operator has also launched a supporting USB modem manufactured by Sierra Wireless, which will be commercially available later this year. Telstra has also confirmed its plans to deploy HSPA+ Dual Carrier plus MIMO technology in 2011, which will double the peak downlink rates to 84 Mbps.
Orange Accelerates the Roll-out of Mobile HD Voice in Europe
Orange has announced its plans to geographically expand its new mobile High Definition voice services in Europe during 2010 with the addition of France, Spain and Luxembourg. The move will be supported by the operator’s efforts to broaden the range of HD mobile handsets across Europe. According to its initial 2010 schedule, Orange intended to roll out its HD voice platform in the UK and Belgium following the service launch in Moldova in September 2009. The operator will conduct a three-month customer trial in the UK starting in the spring this year.
M1 Successfully Completes 100 Mbps Data Call on Trial LTE Network
Singapore’s MobileOne (M1) and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) have completed 100 Mbps data call on the operator’s trial LTE network. The call used commercially ready LTE network equipment from NSN. M1 will be showcasing High Definition TV streaming, as well as high-speed file download over an LTE network at its flagship store until the end of March 2010.
