Turkey poised for 3G success
As Turkey readies for the launch of 3G services on 31 July, delegates at this week's UMTS Forum 3G/Mobile Broadband Eurasia Leadership Seminar were presented a positive picture of 3G success globally and growing momentum behind LTE (Long Term Evolution).

ZTE Inks Contract with Vistream to Build GSM/UMTS Core Network in Germany
ZTE has been contracted by Vistream, Germany’s first mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE), to deploy a GSM/UMTS core network. ZTE will provide advanced solutions to Vistream to construct a GSM/UMTS core network with a 500,000-subscriber capacity. The move will help Vistream lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) and enable delivery of high speed mobile access and applications.

Qualcomm and ZTE Collaborate to Boost UMTS System Performance

América Móvil and Nokia to bring mobile email services to customers in Latin America
Latin American mobile group América Móvil has joined forces with Nokia to launch the Nokia Messaging mobile email service in seven countries before the end of 2009, adding email to music and maps for the ultimate mobile multimedia experience. América Móvil and Nokia will initially launch Nokia Messagingin five countries this summer. The service will be available on the WCDMA-enabled Nokia E63 and three HSDPA-enabled handsets: the Nokia E71 Black, Nokia E72 and Nokia E75.

Ericsson and Smart Provide High-Speed Mobile Broadband in the Philippines
Ericsson has signed a contract with the Philippines’ mobile operator Smart to upgrade its GSM network to WCDMA/HSPA technology nationwide. According to the Swedish vendor, Smart will be the first operator in Southeast Asia to commercially deploy HSPA in the 850 MHz frequency band. The HSPA-enabled network will allow Smart to offer the highest mobile broadband speeds to technology-savvy subscribers in the Philippines.

SFR Subscribers Set to Speed on Mobile Internet Highway
Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has completed an all-IP backhaul network migration for French operator SFR. The implementation of all-IP mobile access technology enables SFR to provide innovative broadband data services thanks to increased network capacity and cost optimisation. NSN’s integrated IP radio access solution is part of the Flexi Base Station platform, which makes it possible to integrate the mobile network with Internet Protocol by a software upgrade.

Telefónica and Palm Announce Palm Pre Exclusive in Europe
Telefónica has signed an exclusive deal with Palm for the distribution of the new Palm Pre smartphone in four European markets through its O2 subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany, and Movistar in Spain. The HSDPA-enabled Palm Pre – the first device based on Palm’s new operating system webOS – will be launched in Europe before the end of 2009.

Ericsson Signs US$1.7 Billion Framework Agreements with Chinese Operators
Ericsson has signed two 2G/3G infrastructure framework contracts with TD-SCDMA-based China Mobile and WCDMA-based China Unicom valued at US$1 billion and US$700 million respectively. According to the deal with China Unicom, Ericsson will become the main supplier to upgrade the operator’s GSM networks in 10 provinces, and will also deploy GSM/WCDMA core network and radio access system in 15 provinces, including transmission, IP and value-added service platform.
Huawei to Build Vodafone Czech Republic´s 3G Network
Vodafone Czech Republic has signed a five-year contract with Chinese vendor Huawei for the expansion of the operator’s WCDMA network. Huawei will supply 3G network infrastructure for the continued 3G rollout in the capital Prague and Brno. Deployment will start in August 2009.
Deutsche Telekom Successfully Tests System for Increasing Capacity in Future Mobile Communications Networks
Deutsche Telekom’s R&D lab and the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute have jointly demonstrated interference-free Coordinated Multi-Point Transmission (CoMP) at the LTE-Advanced downlink testbed. The CoMP is considered a key technology in the current standardisation of the future mobile communications standard LTE-Advanced. It guarantees a more efficient use of the radio spectrum and hence greater bandwidth.
