Option Shipping Stylish New Wireless Router: the GlobeSurfer III
Belgian wireless technology company Option has started shipping HSPA-based wireless router to mobile operators, distributors and resellers. Featuring the Qualcomm 7225 chipset, the GlobeSurfer III router creates an instant WiFi hotspot, enabling multiple users to share the same HSPA mobile broadband connection. The USB device offers HSUPA-based peak upload speeds up to 5.76 Mbps and download speeds up to 7.2 Mbps. The GlobeSurfer III reiterates the role of wireless broadband as a real alternative to DSL.

Government Announces Scheme to Deliver Broadband across Ireland
The Irish government has awarded the contract to implement and operate the National Broadband Scheme (NBS) to Hutchison Whampoa’s Irish subsidiary, 3 Ireland. Under the €223 million investment programme, 3 Ireland will extend its WCDMA/HSPA 3G mobile broadband network to rural parts of the country where broadband services are currently not available. Initially, the service will have a minimum downlink transfer rate of 1.2 Mbps (maximum 5 Mbps), moving to maximum downlink speeds of 6.8 Mbps by 2010 and 10.4 Mbps by 2012 as part of two scheduled upgrades. The Department for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR) aims for universal broadband coverage by September 2010, with half of the area under the scheme to be covered by the end of 2009.

Nortel, Kapsch CarrierCom Extend Mobile Broadband Services for mobilkom austria
Nortel and Austria’s Kapsch CarrierCom have been selected by mobilkom austria to deliver a platform for new mobile broadband services, including TV and satellite navigation system services, across Austria, Lichtenstein and Slovenia. Nortel’s All-IP Voice Core Solution converts mobilkom austria's existing WCDMA/HSPA network into a robust, carrier-grade network and offers ease of transition to enhanced services, including IMS, enabling the operator to cut operating costs and increases cost-effectiveness. As part of the project, Kapsch CarrierCom is managing the system implementation and system integration.

Leading Hungarian Operator Selects Alcatel-Lucent for Cost Efficient Mobile Backhaul
Hungarian mobile operator Pannon has signed a contract with the French vendor Alcatel-Lucent for a cost-efficient mobile backhaul upgrade in an effort to accommodate the growing demand for its HSPA-based mobile broadband services. Alcatel-Lucent will supply a MPLS-based, cost optimized and future proof Remote Access Network (RAN) mobile backhaul solution. Pannon’s HSPA network is available in over 360 towns and villages across Hungary, covering 65% of the country’s population.

T-Mobile G1 Will Launch on February 2 in Germany
Following the successful launch of the T-Mobile G1 smartphone in the U.S. and the U.K., T-Mobile will unveil the Android-based device in continental Europe on 2 February. The T-Mobile G1, the world first handset running the Android operating system, will be launched in Germany, followed by Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and the Netherlands. The touch-screen T-Mobile G1 with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard features mobile broadband connectivity based on HSDPA technology, enabling peak downlink transfer rates of up to 7.2 Mbps. The device is manufactured by Taiwan’s HTC for Google and T-Mobile.
Nokia Siemens Networks is One of Two Vendors Selected by DTAC to Supply Gear for its 3G Network
Thailand’s mobile operator, Total Access Communication Public Company (DTAC), has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) as one of its two vendors to upgrade its network to 3G. Under the terms of the agreement, NSN will deliver radio access network with both 2G and 3G technologies to DTAC. In the Core network, DTAC’s Circuit Switch will be enhanced to accommodate 2G/3G, and a Packet Switch will be introduced for HSPA technology (High Speed Packet Access). This will help DTAC to increase its high speed data throughput in packet core network, simplifying the network architecture and enhancing the data flow between the end-user and the internet.
