StarHub Commences Upgrade of Mobile Broadband Network After Successful Live Demonstration of HSPA Plus
Singapore mobile operator StarHub has commenced a network upgrade to HSPA+ technology, with equipment provided by Huawei. During the trials, StarHub achieved peak downlink rates of 21 Mbps, which compares with its current network capacity of 14.4 Mbps, and peak uplink rates of 5.76 Mbps. With HSPA+ upgrades already completed by Australia’ Telstra and Hong Kong’s PCCW, StarHub is amongst the first operators in the world to upgrade their networks to HSPA+.
License to Operate 3G Digital Cell Business with WCDMA Technology
China’s second largest mobile group China Unicom has confirmed that the company received its 3G licence for WCDMA technology. China Unicom is one of the three Chinese state-run incumbent mobile operators that have been awarded 3G licences by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The country’s leading mobile group China Mobile received a TD-SCDMA licence, while China Telecom was allocated a CDMA2000 licence.
Alcatel-Lucent Successfully Deploys a 3G+ Network for SRR in Réunion
French telecoms network equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent has completed the deployment of an HSPA network for the mobile operator SRR in Réunion Island, a dominion of France. The upgrade will enable SRR to offer mobile broadband internet and other advanced wireless data services.
AT&T Mobility and Motorola to Offer the Rugged Tundra VA76r on Jan. 13
US mobile group AT&T has unveiled the Motorola Tundra VA76r, a rugged HSPA-enabled clamshell touchscreen device. Designed as a durable mobile phone for the use in rough environments, the Tundra VA76r is designed to work with AT&T's Push to Talk (PTT) service. It also features also a 2-megapixel camera and support for AT&T Navigator.
UMTS Frequencies Arouse Great Interest in Hungary
Hungarian telecommunications regulator NHH has announced the bidders for its 900/1800/2100 MHz licence tender. The regulator has received four bids for bundle A, which consists of 900/1800/2100 MHz spectrum bands and was open only to newcomers. The NHH will award a 15-year licence to the winning bidder, which will allow a fourth GSM/UMTS mobile operator to enter the Hungarian market. The winner will be required to establish a network that covers at least 35% of the population within three years. The NHH will also award licences for 450 MHz and 26 GHz frequencies to stimulate competition on the mobile and broadband internet market and improve internet coverage in the sparsely populated regions of the country.
Motorola Unveils World’s First Mobile Phone Made Using Recycled Water Bottle Plastics and New 3G Touch Tablet with Customizable Home Screen
Motorola has introduced a new Windows Mobile-based HSPA-enabled touchscreen smartphone, the Motosurf A3100. The HSDPA device allows peak broadband download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps together with 1.8Mbps HSUPA uplink . Motorola is promoting the Motosurf A310 as a “true social smartphone” with a home screen that can be fully personalised.
