Chinese market ready for mobile broadband to flourish
China’s telecoms market offers a positive environment for mobile broadband to flourish over the next few years, says 3G industry association the UMTS Forum. With China’s administration now drawing closer to issuing 3G licenses, UMTS Forum Chairman Jean-Pierre Bienaimé has predicted that timely 3G deployments could be followed by LTE (Long Term Evolution) commercialisation as early as 2012-2013.
Ericsson Selected to Manage 3G Radio Access Network Operations for T-Mobile and 3 UK
Following their network-sharing deal signed in the beginning of 2008, T-Mobile UK and 3UK have awarded Sweden’s Ericsson for a four-year managed services contract for the operation and maintenance of the consolidated network. Having achieved almost complete population coverage, the operators plan to improve dense urban in-building coverage in 2009, creating the UK's most extensive 3G network by 2010. Their joint 3G HSDPA-enabled network supports speeds of up 4.5 Mbps and is the first 3G network in the UK to provide a nationwide HSUPA capability for faster uploads.

New HTC Touch 3G Immerse Yourself in Ultra-Fast Internet and Touch Screen Control So Effortless
The Taiwanese smartphone maker has launched a touch-screen HSDPA-enabled smartphone capable of downlink speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Following the recent release of the touch-screen BlackBerry Storm, the HTC Touch 3G is yet another touch-screen 3G device from a major smartphone maker that attempts to fire back at Apple’s iPhone. The HTC Touch 3G, which is initially exclusively available from Hong Kong’s PCCW Mobile, will face competition from other rival touch-screen smartphones, such as the BlackBerry Storm, Google’s Android G1, Nokia's 5800, Samsung's Omnia, and Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1.

MTS Launches 3G Networks in Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk
Russia’s leading mobile operator MTS expands coverage of its 3G HSPA-enabled network to Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk. The company, which had launched in Russia in May 2008, plans to reach 14 cities in total by the end of 2008 and 14 cities by the end of 2009. The company also holds UMTS licenses in Uzbekistan and Armenia, where it intends to deploy 3G services in 2009. 3G services have boosted MTS’s revenue from value-added services (VAS), with VAS share of average revenue per user (ARPU) reaching 14.8% in the third quarter of 2008 from 13.7% in the same period last year.

TRC announces issuing the statement on licensing the use of 3G cellular communications Technologies Radio Frequencies in Jordan
The Jordanian telecoms regulator reveals plans to issue four 15-year UMTS licences in a two-stage process scheduled to start in mid-December 2008. In the first phase, one 3G licence will be auctioned in a tender that will be open to all the incumbent operators and new entrants, with the winner to be announced at the end of January 2009. The minimum price for a paired block (2x5MHz) in the 2.1 GHz band has been set at JOD25 million (US$35.3 million), with bidders free to acquire one block of 10, 15 or 20 MHz of paired spectrum. After the subsequent 10-month separation period, the TRC will offer three UMTS licences (10MHz each) to the existing mobile operators, like Orange, Zain and Umniah, that have not won the tender, at the price established in the initial auction. The regulator will then open a new tender for the remaining 2G spectrum in the 900 and 1800 MHz band, priced at 130% of the cost of the 3G spectrum. It will be open to the 3G licence holders. According to the current 3G rollout requirements, Jordanians will have access to 3G services in major cities in 2010.

DNA Launches Even More Affordable Subscription Option DNA Mainio
Finland’s third largest mobile operator has launched a partially ad-funded mobile tariff plan branded Mainio, inspired by the European ad-sponsored MVNO Blyk. DNA expects that Mainio will boost the usage of MMS and video calls by its 3G customers. Mainio features marketing messages sent through SMS, MMS and e-mail. Mobile operators gradually turn to mobile advertising as a potentially lucrative new revenue stream. The example of Blyk has proven mobile advertising to be a successful advertising medium with the younger audiences.

Orange UK Launches New Combined Home and Mobile Broadband
Orange UK has bundled HSDPA-enabled mobile broadband and ADSL-based broadband services, following in the footsteps of O2 UK and Virgin Media. The Orange Home & Broadband plan is only available to customers in LLU areas. The UK broadband players have turned to an integrated services business model as the competition heats up and customers increasingly demand broadband internet access regardless of whether they are at home or on the go, without having to subscribe to broadband services from two separate providers.
Mobile Internet Growth Eight Times Greater Than PC-Based Internet Growth
The recent explosive growth in mobile internet use in the UK has been driven by cuts in mobile data prices, the availability of flexible flat-rate data tariffs, as well as the increased penetration of 3G handsets and improved speeds on WCDMA/HSDPA networks. As the barriers holding back mobile internet are lifted, the availability of popular online services, such as BBC News, Google Search, BBC Weather and the social networking website Facebook, further encourages the takeup of mobile internet services. Mobile operators and handset vendors also work closely on integrating popular online website, such as Facebook, within mobile handsets to drive mobile internet traffic. With a higher concentration of the younger demographic groups than the fixed-line broadband internet, mobile internet is attracting advertisers keen to reach the young consumers.
Symbian Reaches 40 Million Mobile Phone Shipments in Japan
The smartphone operating system provider Symbian, backed by Finland’s Nokia, has announced that more than 40 million Symbian-based WCDMA/HSPA-enabled mobile phones have shipped to Japan by the end of the third quarter of 2008. Symbian’s main customers in Japan include market leader NTT DoCoMo and number-three player SoftBank, which operate two of Japan’s three UMTS/WCDMA networks.
Orange Brings High Definition Mobile TV to Unik
France Telecom, the first operator in Europe to launch live mobile TV in 2004, has unveiled high definition (HD) mobile TV. The service offers 60 mobile TV channels, with unlimited access to 20 channels, available on the Orange unlicensed mobile access (UMA) 3G platform, which was launched in September 2007. It targets 1.3 million French customers using Unik, its fixed-mobile convergent service that combines the WCDMA/HSDPA network with WiFi access. The HD mobile TV service is available on the new UMA-enabled LG Secret KF757 handset, with the integrated Orange TV Player mobile TV software, and the Sony Ericsson G705u via the Orange World portal. Orange strongly believes in the potential of personal mobile TV, which is a crucial part of the Group’s convergent strategy.
