The first IMT-2000/UMTS services were launched in the core band (1920-1980 MHz/2110-2170 MHz) during 2001. There are still sparsely populated and remote areas where there are challenges in providing the IMS-2000/UMTS services in a cost-efficient way. Deploying UMTS in the 900 MHz band can facilitate the provision of expected IMT-2000/UMTS services to users in those areas.
