December 11th 1998:

UMTS FORUM APPOINTS DR. BERND EYLERT AS NEW CHAIRMAN
DeTeMobil ”Next Mobile Generation” Group Head succeeds Thomas Beijer
Dec 11th 1998, Juan les Pins, France: - Dr. Bernd Eylert, Head of Deutsche Telekom MobilNet’s Next Mobile Generation Group, has been elected as new Chairman of The UMTS Forum. He takes over from outgoing Chairman Thomas Beijer, Technical Development at Telia Mobile’s Network Strategy Division, who handed over to Dr Eylert at the 14th meeting of the UMTS Forum General Assembly in Juan les Pins, France, on December 9th-11th 1998. In the same meeting, Josef-Franz Huber (Siemens) was elected as Vice Chairman. Dr Chris Wildey (Nokia) also remains in office as Vice Chairman for a further year.
Dr Eylert paid tribute to Thomas Beijer’s achievements as Chairman of the Forum from 1996-98:
”Under Thomas’s inspired leadership we have seen many exciting developments within the UMTS Forum, including its rapid growth in membership to 160 organisations today.”
”Among other significant achievements, Thomas’ Chairmanship has overseen publication by the Forum of five landmark reports addressing issues of spectrum, licensing and market size for third generation services. These reports have been widely accepted as being an instrumental part of the 3G decision-making process by key players across telecoms, IT, content and governmental sectors.”
”We thank Thomas for his drive and vision during the past two years, and are also indebted to Telia for their support during this rapid period of development for the Forum and for UMTS. In the last two years, we have seen UMTS evolve from origins as a technology concept to the major proposed standard for third generation global mobile telecommunications systems (IMT-2000).”
Dr Eylert also noted that under his own Chairmanship, The UMTS Forum will continue to play a vital role in facilitating the timely introduction of 3G services in Europe from January 2002:
”With the licensing process due to commence in earnest during 1999, the UMTS Forum will continue to promote cross-industry dialogue and consensus between telecoms, IT and content players that will be vital to the future market success of UMTS services.”
Dr Eylert joined Deutsche Bundespost Telekom in 1990. In 1993 he moved to the operator’s mobile communications subsidiary DeTeMobil in Münster as Senior Director and Head of Department ”Development of New Mobile Communication Services”. Early in 1997 he was appointed Vice President and became Head of Department for DeTeMobil’s ”Next Mobile Generation” Group, a post which he holds today in Bonn alongside his new role as UMTS Forum Chairman.
Dr Eylert has been a representative for Deutsche Telekom and/or DeTe-Mobil in ETSI (TC RES, TC SMG, PAC), ITU-R SG 8, MoU PMT, MoU GSM 3GIG, UMTS Fo-rum. He was a member of the EU Commission’s UMTS Task Force, a founding member of UMTS Forum, and is the present chairman of UMTS Forum’s Operators Group.
